This site has a collection of pix from SCCA pro events in the early '70s -- Michigan area, POR, etc. Amateur photos credited to “McMahon” with lots of beat and battered cars, 510s among them.

CVs indeed -- they went back and forth on this. Page 175 adds more relevant info.

In "How to Modify...", BRE had similar problems with U-joints, but they were being pushed to the extreme. Surprising CVs aren't working better.

Looks like the electronics can be relocated and the case trimmed for less bulk, but that motor is still a challenge.
