Re: 2nd Datsun GO! Event - Aguascalientes, Mexico Aug. 26

Some 510's & 610's. Note: They were not called "510's" or "610's" in Latin America. All of the home market cars were 4 doors with live rear axles - no IRS versions. There were a few 2-doors there today but these would have been originally sold in the US them brought into Mexico at some point - often...

2nd Datsun GO! Event - Aguascalientes, Mexico Aug. 26

IMG_0073.JPG (Small).JPG I popped over to the nearby city of Aguascalientes (Central Mexico) today to take in this event. I was curious what the Mexicans have in the way of collector Datsuns. Well, I was blown away by the size of the show - possibly well over 200 vintage Datsuns. Some very nice exa...

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car

Yes, I have made a bit of further progress. In June I took another trip up to Ontario and retrieved the rest of the car (in parts). The shell would not fit in my 5'x10' cargo trailer so I built a flat bed single axle (1.7 mtr. x 3.0 mtr.) to use to go get it. Worked out really well and I had no prob...

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car

This fall I decided to move the "bits & pieces" of the Grasshopper down to my home in Mexico so I can do some more work on it. I no longer have a place to work on it in Canada so am setting up a little shop down here. Since Mexican "customs" will not allow permanent residents to own and drive non-Me...

Good to hear from you Keith. I have not seen the book "The Chequered Past" so I will see if I can find it.

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car

Actually I am currently visiting family in Ontario and have been staying with one of my son's for a few weeks to work on this. I don't have access to a shop but working on it inside a 24' car trailer. I have made some good progress. I stripped out both the donor shell and the rally car and after a l...

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car

Rumor has it that the original Grasshopper may be getting another life. I am currently working out the best way of rebuilding it and should have some pics posted soon.

Re: Datsun Bluebirds in Mexico

Do you ever see really nice $50-100K MX ($4-8k USD) examples, something a car collector might have? There are some decent collector examples around especially in the Leon/Guanajuato area in that price range. I also have heard of a really good one owner sedan in Guadalajara that the guy wants around...

Re: Datsun Bluebirds in Mexico

So I bought the baby blue '69 above. It has been hit at some time both on the front and the rear so not really worth the bother of fixing it up. Going to part it out next weekend and send the shell to the scrap yard. Anyone have any interest in any of the parts? Motor is a J16 apparently. If your no...

Re: Datsun Bluebirds in Mexico

And for the wagon fans, here is an example of a Mexican 1973 wagon. It looks like it has the J15 as well but the ad posted by the owner says 1600? He is asking $22,000 MX for this one but notice it doesn't have any windshield wipers or a battery. These must be "extra" cost options!!!.

Re: Datsun Bluebirds in Mexico

Road conditions - don't get me started!!! Mexicans don't obey signs (many can't read) so the most effective speed control measure that they have come to utilize is the TOPE (translation - monstrous speed bump). They come in many different shapes and sizes, heights, inclination angles and type. Just ...
