R180 CV complete

Quick update on the CVs. One R160 CV and stub set has already been sold to Fred_L-P, Datsun Restomods' first customer! Super great guy btw, he spent several hrs with Andrew and I last weekend. R180_1.jpg For my trip out to Vancouver next week a couple of R160 versions (OEM length), and this shorter ...

Datsun Restomods - CV

Do the square flanges you weld on retain the round boss that keeps the axle concentric to the stub axles? Absolutely! You can see it circled on the pic below along with a Suretrac R160 diff and new diff stubs (in silver). I tried to duplicate OEM wherever possible. As FYI, the pictured prototype wa...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

The shouldered sections act as locating dowels in shear across the flanges with a higher class fit; this removes stress concentrations that would exist at thread roots, where non-shouldered fasteners would most likely suffer from cyclic fatigue. If he doesn't include shouldered bolts and then someo...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

Absolutely a R180 solution is in the works. However, it looks like I'll have to include new shouldered hub bolts with the R180 CV which will add $60USD to the R160's $580USD price. Those damn bolts are NOT cheap! Otherwise, those interested will have to pull and ship to me their existing set to get ...

The CVs come off a vehicle with 225 lbs/ft so that's going to be the official 'warranty' number. Overall they are quite large and fill the space between the control arm and moustach bar... leaving only 1/2" of room in places. From what I've seen the housings are a good 15-20% larger than the JDM Sub...

Mark II

Finished up a second set of CVs for Andrew to test. I'd say he's doing a great job! https://youtu.be/EApocIis-rs Mark II.jpg Production versions will be stealthy matte black, but these are silver for a little more show in front of the lens. 8) A couple little tweaks were required on the CVs to insta...

Subaru Suretrac R160 LSD almost a bolt-on reality...

I've got my hands on a Subaru R160 Suretrac (LSD) and am looking to test my axles stubs on it this weekend.

For those who've asked I'm hoping to start shipping end of November.

Re: Rear Axles

I've developed some direct bolt-in CV axles for 510.

Servicable, reliable, and beefy enough to handle at least 220 ft/lbs.

I'm just wrapping up testing and they should be available in a few weeks.

Exciting news

After nearly a year and a half of trying to troubleshoot my noise/vibration issues on the 510, I concluded it was the U-joints - despite seeming fine when inspected. Looking at the CV options out there I decided I wanted a cheaper solution, that was OEM-reliable, and strong. As I dug deeper into the...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

Agreed, cool car! It would be nice to see a build thread on the Realm. We should try and get an Ottawa - Montreal Datsun together sometime next summer. Beau's brewery in Vankleek Hill (about 25 min West from Rigaud) is a perfect mid-way location and lot of fun roads to cruise to/from in the Laurenti...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

Was that at the JDM Fest in Saint-Eustache? Someone posted a picture of your 510s on their page. That wasn't us - we were at the 'Nokia' car show in Kanata (Ottawa). I wasn't even aware of JDM Fest. Any good? Might try to visit it next year. I've autocrossed in Saint-Eustache - right on the oval in...

Car show with fellow Realm member

Andrew sent me a text last week with the intentions of organizing a mini Datsun get-together at a large local car show. Unfortunately only the two of us were free but it was still a great outing. Drive1.jpg During the drive there I realised it's the first time I've actually had a chance to see anoth...

New fronts springs

I'm at the point now that my car is sorted out enough that I can actually look at reassessing previous mods, ie: 280zx brakes getting stainless lines and brake booster upgrade (next project and hopeful fall posting). This time around it's the front suspension. Years ago I purchased some generic eBay...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

Yeah, I heard about that when visiting him a couple of weeks ago. Glad to hear you guys troubleshooted - I know if was driving him nuts. Sounds like he's driving it lots now! I think my problem is different. The bushing that holds the pedal onto the pivot rod of the pedal box has developed play. Bot...
