Project 635 - Christmas edition

I hope everyone had an enjoyable holidays so far. We've been logging hours on WRC10 with a SIM setup and man it's intense!!! VERY similar mental focus/fatigue to lapping IMO. I find WRC10 quite realistic in terms of feel and ability to communicate what the car is doing w/o any G-forces. Far better t...

Project 635 - Front Suspension pics

Fourth update this month, a sign that assembly is far less time consuming than fabrication. FrontChassisBrace.jpg Here's the front chassis brace. It's a pretty simple setup that ties the two front Traction Control Rods / frame studs together and further braces against a couple of nuts I welded into ...

Rear suspension pics

After a couple of hours this morning I had the rear subframe, springs, and dampers installed. Rear1.jpg I figured it would be a good time to get a few more detailed pics since much of this will be hidden going forward. Rear2.jpg I've mentioned a few times the 'double shear' (aka subframe bracing) br...

Absolutely - and similar to painting IMO. Relatively small amount of work for visually huge progress.

This is the fun stuff.

Project 635 - Frame is ready for FINAL assembly

Man, I can't believe how long it's taken to get this build to get to the point where I can post this kind of update. The best part of final assembly is how much it frees space in the garage! For those who haven't done this before, a stripped car takes a lot of room. I've got pieces to 3 different bu...

farm implement enamel paint Now there's an interesting thought, I'm building mine to be driven anytime anywhere and have the same desire for durability - are you limited in color choices or can you do at least a reasonably wide spectrum of choices? Not everything looks right in JD green :-) There s...

Project 635's frame gets stripped and flipped

A quick update on 635. I've finished welding and cleaning the top of the frame. It took less than an hour to remove the suspension/brakes and fuel system. As previously mentioned, it was a PITA to originally design the various systems and how they'll fasten to the frame, but the ease of repeated ass...

Re: Which CV axle conversion kit is the best?

I'll take a stab at this. 4 years ago I was a consumer asking the very same question. Being the creator/fabricator of Datsun Restomods axles I may seem bias but my goal was always to provide a product for a very specific type of market at a price that was close to my cost as possible. Over the years...

635 painting has begun

This is a 3rd November update which means not only a lot of progress, but something worthy to show. With cold weather coming, and VERY specific painting temperatures required for various paints, I rushed to get started this weekend. I burned quite a bit of wood keeping my garage at least 70 degrees ...

I was under the impression that Honda K24 was fairly heavy (similar to Nissan K24) and quite tall. I'm looking forward to seeing what numbers you get.

Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch

Anyone know where I can source an R180 LSD? www.car-part.com is an awesome source for sourcing used bolt-in R180 Subaru STI LSD diffs. You can get them for approx $400, clutch or Torsen, 3.9 or 3.54. ... and no project is too hard if you have realistic expectations and maintain motivation. Keep chi...

Project 635 gets some drifting bits

Since my last update I've been throwing a steady 15-20hrs/week at project 635. Unfortunately I haven't painted yet (nor seam sealed) because the final cab clean-up has been taking quite a bit more time than anticipated. Rest assured my To-Do list is damn near done for this phase and I literally have...

Last cab fitment and frame strengthening

I haven't spent much time covering the work I put into the frame so here's a little update. The frame has quite a bit of additional strengthening. Most of it was torsional in focus to offset the VQ35DE's torque. In the pic below I'm pointing at the only two stock cross bracings. StockBracing.jpg Whe...

Bushings... done!!!

Here's a second update on the bushings. I can finally say the front & back are done. For document's sake here's my master list. WhitelineBushings.jpg As I worked through the back it became apparent that quite of few of the stock rubber bushings were toast. Before: Done.jpg After: RearSpringBucke...

Crossbar modification

One more quick update that I decided to partition (mostly due to the 10 picture limit). Due to the increase engine torque this frame will be facing, I've added several strong bracing along the frame rails. Crossbar.jpg One bar comes close to the driveshaft. I was assured by the driveshaft vendor tha...
