Re: 5 Speed swap parts list?

Again I really appreciate the insight Mike this is very helpful, and thanks for the input Bert.

I got my head back from the shop today too, so I should be in business relatively soon.

Re: 5 Speed swap parts list?

Thank you Mike, I will test the tranny this evening using the method you listed. Mike or anyone else do you have any thoughts on the other questions I asked two posts above?

Re: 5 Speed swap parts list?

Well I bought the output seal, the pilot bearing, and the throw out bearing and sleeve but before I throw the transmission in the car I few more questions. 1) As best as I can tell by the research I did it's a 280zx 5 speed but I wanted to confirm. I bought the transmission from a guy that had an MG...

Re: Any hope for this head?

Thank you for the feedback guys this is good advice. I ended up decided to bite the bullet and I took the head to a reputable shop this time. They are in the process of cleaning it and checking it out and I should get some info tomorrow. I did bring them the valve guide seals that I got from you Jul...

Re: Any hope for this head?

Well I picked up a W53 closed chamber head today for a good price and it appears to be in decent condition. It's a little dirty but i'm not sure if it needs to be rebuilt or just cleaned up. Anyone have any advice on determining if a head needs rebuilding or anything replaced?

Re: Any hope for this head?

This was the head that I mentioned in a previous post that had a snapped camshaft. They were machining the top to flatten it out. I'm not sure how much they took off each side. I do not believe they are a quality machine shop unfortunately and i'm learning a hard lesson. With that said I am going to...

Re: Any hope for this head?

Thank you for the response Mike. If I get the chain the right length will this set up be changing the timing at all, or affecting the valve train in a negative way? Do you think in addition to adding the link/s I should also shim the cam towers? This head is the closed chamber a87 head. I also have ...

Any hope for this head?

Hey guys, it has been awhile. Life has gotten in the way lately and the poor Datusn has been collecting dust in the garage but I am finally back at it. So after a series of misadventures and increasingly poor decisions on my part I finally have a "rebuilt" long block that I am trying to bu...

That's looking really nice and I like that battleship grey. Are you going to paint the whole car that color?

Re: 5 Speed swap parts list?

Wow, thank you Mike for that thorough write up. I guess you do learn something new everyday. I've heard/read people talking about the different flywheels but wasn't sure what the differences were, and why they wanted different weights until now. I will be checking mine out when I head back out in th...

Re: 5 Speed swap parts list?

Thank you for the thorough list Mike, and thanks for the recommendation about the trains fluid, I was meaning to sort that out as well.

As fas as flywheels go for performance should I get a 200mm (L16?) Flywheel and clutch? Do people go with smaller/lighter flywheels so they rev up quicker?

Man I can't believe how nice of a job was done on the repairs, and the blacked out grill does look good. It's nice that you have some great shops that you can trust.
