Re: 510 chassis/subframe upgrades to compensate for added hp

Thanks for chiming in Guy’s. I appreciate it. I’m building my first 510 and it will be for my wife. This is by far not my first time building a vehicle but have never played with Datsun before. It is a 1971 4 door 510. We just recently sold her 1982 Corvette and this will be her replacement. It may ...

Re: 510 chassis/subframe upgrades to compensate for added hp

Read the full post and it was very interesting and informative but don’t see that it addresses strengthening the chassis/subframe.
Hoping to do make any chassis upgrades prior to building the motor and trani mounts.

510 chassis/subframe upgrades to compensate for added hp

Hi guys,
I’m just wondering if any of you have upgraded your chassis/subframe to help compensate for motor/horsepower increases.
If so, how did you do it and do you have any pics you can share.
I have some ideas but would love to see what others have done.
Thanks,
Rob

Re: 70s 2dr shell parts

If you still have this, I’m looking for a nice front core support to replace the one in my 1971 4 door 510.
Thanks,
Rob

Re: Brake question

I found one of the brass blocks for the rear brakes that would be mounted on the firewall behind the motor off of another car that I have and opened it up to check it out. Really doesn’t look like a restricted just a junction block so pretty sure there should be no issue there. Just thought I’d put ...

Re: Brake question

So got the new front pads installed today and took it for a test drive and bedded them in. The brakes are greatly improved and the fronts are very acceptable. I believe they would have locked up if I really stood on it. The backs still don’t feel like they are fully applying. I checked the temps of ...

Re: Brake question

I worked on the brakes today. Cleaned the front rotors and scuffed them with 80 grit sand paper. Went to put on the new pads but they got me the wrong ones so I’ll have to try to get the correct ones tomorrow. Cleaned and scuffed the rear rotors and put on the new pads. It really doesn’t look like t...

Re: Brake question

All 4 of my calipers have square seals. I do know that I have seen rebuild kits for Vette calipers that offer round seals though I’ve never used them.

Re: Brake question

So I had a few minutes and the talk about the difference between MC for 4 wheel disc to disc / drum made me think. I still had the original 3/4” MC from the car that was a disc drum set up so I took it apart to check for anything different between the front and back. There was a a difference between...

Re: Brake question

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think at this point I’m going to reclean and scuff the rotors and install new pads front and rear just to make sure. They’re cheap and I want to make the car safe. I did bench bleed the MC before installing. I remember that when we were two person bleeding the rear brake...

Re: Brake question

Byron, The only real new parts in the front are the rotors and ss flex lines. The car had the 280zx set up when I purchased it and stock drum rear. The fronts seemed to work fine but never really drove it much due to other issues. The front rotors were bad so I replaced them and rebuilt the calipers...

Re: Brake question

Ok put the car on the lift, started it and placed it in gear, automatic trans. I’m able to make the rear wheels spin easier than I believe they should with giving it gas. At idle it holds them still. Had my wife apply the brakes and I attempted to rotate the front tires. No way, very tight. Then the...

Re: Brake question

The rotors were cleaned upon install. In fact the other day before driving it to town I had noticed the rotors had a slight bit of rust due to being outside during the last rain. I am unable to lock up any of the brakes but believe the fronts are doing the majority of the work. The brake travel is a...
