Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

Matt, I was just thinking about the fins, why not put them on the inside where they can be fit in? Less material to mill out and more surface area for the oil to transfer heat to. The issue really isn't with the oil transferring heat to the cover, it's more a matter of the cover transferring the he...

Re: For sale 1971 Datsun 510

Wasn't it okayfine who wrote up that pinned "how to sell your car"?? Since it was mentioned: http://the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13564 Writing big long descriptive ads is cool and all... but it only sells cars to people who are willing to read big long descriptive ads. Which as far as I can ...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

I have material on hand for 1 of R160 and 1 of R180. Is everyone ok with the port once I move it to the right side away from the oil stream? Once that is decided I'm going to start accepting R160 payments. Now for the R180 it will be of the same design as the R160 but with 13 fins. I will post that...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

That'll probably get the job done. I whipped up a crude sketch of what the oil splash pattern onto a diff cover typically looks like under operation...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

Wow that is a very good price cosidering the amount of work that is needed in that. just interested to know what the material cost is per piece? and if you have a good source maybe you will share :) Aron I was thinking along the same lines. I'm no machinist, but I know bar stock starts to get a bit...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

That vent tube location looks a little sketchy... Viewed under operation (using high speed video) the ring gear is continually slinging out a large taffy-like rope of gear oil that strikes the back cover. Pretty much in the middle. Top to bottom. Sending a stream of hot bubbling crude up the vent tu...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

^^^

I'd also like to add that the 11 cooling fins on Matt's design will definitely provide more radiative surface area than the exactly zero fins supplied on the OEM unit.

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

I can do a threaded port for a catch can, or I can do a stock bore for the factory style plastic pressure port. Comments or Opinions please? I'd say just offer the smooth bore myself, but then again, I ain't going to be doing any competitive racing either. If'n I did get the itch, I'd bore it out, ...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

Julian I think the failure in the frame you show has a lot to do with design. Even in drawn material a square abutment is far weaker than that of a radial abutment. I would go so far as to say that if that portion pictured had a radius transition like the portion to the right in the photo the crack...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

...I have come across 000,000,000 fatigue failures in drawn non ferrous material such as 6061. Oh I don't know... I've seen a ton of failures in 6061 aluminum. But then again it's what I do for a living. As in I perform environmental, proof-loading, acoustic/modal/vibe and structural testing in the...

Re: New potential products for 510's and Datsun from Mattnde

Is this an urban legend? Most probably. Steel is far more ductile than aluminum and has a practically infinite fatigue life when kept within the realms of elastic deformation. Or in street speak: unless you bend it, it'll last forever. Aluminum, on the other hand, will eventually develop fractures ...
