Thanks! Yes, it finally feels like I've made a little progress. Now, I'll have to get back to welding. Booo! lol!

Re: 72 2 Door 510 Restoration-25 years in the making

I think I'll head into town tomorrow to pick up some wrinkle paint so I can try to finish up the engine and bag it until I'm ready to install it. Today, I mostly cleaned up my work space and did some final details on the engine. I painted my bolt heads silver, made my plug wires, gapped and installe...

Re: 72 2 Door 510 Restoration-25 years in the making

Thanks for the tip! I did get it very clean, but the aluminum just had a "mottled" look to it that I didn't like. I'm sure the WD40 tip will come in very handy soon. I still have a TON of stuff to clean up. :)

Re: 72 2 Door 510 Restoration-25 years in the making

3B, I eyeballed it yesterday & you're right, it won't go. I'll have to bolt it up when it's hanging on the hoist, I guess. I painted the head "cast silver" (because I couldn't get it clean enough to look nice), and started polishing the valve cover. I wet sanded it with 800, then 1000 and then used ...

Re: 72 2 Door 510 Restoration-25 years in the making

After some help here, I got the oil pump thing sorted. I also got the oil pan installed and painted the motor mounts and alternator bracket, so they're ready when the time comes. Tomorrow, I'll be installing the flywheel. That should be a real treat by myself since it weighs so much and I haven't re...

Re: WTB: Exhaust Manifold for L-16

Thanks, Jim. Sounds reasonable to me, but I'll let you know for sure tomorrow. Hubby is driving his train, so I can't get a hold of him right now. He's the wallet. ;)

Re: WTB: Exhaust Manifold for L-16

Ouch! That's some steep shipping! I have a friend in Finland that I ship stuff to & I'm always shocked how expensive it is.

I'd like a pic when you get a chance. Thanks!

Re: Oil Pump Install Question

I thought about omitting it, too. Sounds like it'd be ok either way. Good to know.

Thanks for the help, guys. Much appreciated. :)

Re: Oil Pump Install Question

Well, I got it. I took the front cover off and double checked everything. It all looked right, but for S&G, I flipped the slinger thinger. I put the cover back on with a couple bolts and bingo, it went together. I must have misunderstood all the slinger thinger descriptions, I dunno. Oh well, it wor...

Re: Oil Pump Install Question

The pump goes right on without the shaft. I've tried to go a tooth either way to get the gears to engage, then also some random turns to rule out a burr or something. The pump, shaft and gear are all the components that were on the engine before and worked together. The shaft does rotate in the pump...

Re: WTB: Exhaust Manifold for L-16

Hi Jim, I do still need one. I'm guessing shipping from Canada to here will be killer, but the shipping zip is 54880. My brother's commercial location, if that matters. That might be a little less expensive than my rural home.

Thanks! :)

Oil Pump Install Question

I posted this question in my build thread, but I'm thinking this might be a better spot. Anyhow, I am having trouble installing the oil pump. I can't get it to seat. I lined up the dimple on the shaft to the oil hole on the pump, the oil slinger thingie is on properly as far as I could tell from pho...

Re: 72 2 Door 510 Restoration-25 years in the making

Thanks, Ron. These sorts of projects are definitely a journey. :) Today, I got the head, timing set, front crank seal and front cover installed. Everything went pretty well and I think I got the cam and crank timing correct. The silver links are lined up to the dot on the crank gear and the number 1...
