Re: OCTOBERFAST 2018

Sounds good, I am hoping to drive back on the Coast highway after leaving Sonoma, never been down that way before, then cut over to Tacoma at the top. Do not have enough time to do the Olympic Peninsula.

Re: "83 280ZX close ratio box and 3:90 differential

That sounds pretty good, does the Sr transmission bolt up to the L-series? I guess..no..I do know I like to be able to just roll on the throttle in 5th and the car just takes off so 5th gives me a very usable power range when in the mountains, without having to gear down, unless I REALLY want to tak...

Re: "83 280ZX close ratio box and 3:90 differential

Just as another point of reference, here is a page from the Nissan Competition catalogue:

At least you can really see the difference in a real race transmission, where 1st gear is really tall, baking the clutch when you try to move from the pre-grid to the race track... :(

Re: "83 280ZX close ratio box and 3:90 differential

For what it is worth, just an FYI.... I have a true Nissan Comp close ratio transmission with the .865 overdrive. P/N 32010-N3130 1st gear: 2.906 2nd gear: 1.902 3rd gear: 1.308 4th gear: 1.000 5th gear: .865 This was originally chosen for a variety of reasons, tall 1st gear relatively so it was kin...

Re: OCTOBERFAST 2018

See my post on hikes.

Typical with the #1 highway, stupid accidents with insane backup for the long weekend traffic. We missed it all!

Re: Bike rides

Mt. Cheam Hike The road heading up to Cheam was just brutal, virtually 4 x 4 the whole way. As an unmaintained road suffering B.C.’s rain and winters, it sure showed it. It was a really cool morning and as we got higher, we disappeared into fog. So much for a view I thought to myself. The clouds wer...

Re: OCTOBERFAST 2018

I have to take the weekend of the 20/21 off the calendar! I am hoping to be at Sonoma Raceway watching Colin Jackson try for his 5th SCCA championship in a row. Going to blast down I-5, stay with the Specialty gang, then work my way up the coast highway.....can you say epic road trip! Thanks Rob, I ...

Re: OCTOBERFAST 2018

Well..ok then. Will the kids fit in your car?

Lets put October 13/14 as our target first attempt. Paul is back from Portugal, as I mentioned the drive to him. Does he have an e-mail?

OCTOBERFAST 2018

It is hard to believe that it is now September, I have been retired for four months now, seems like forever already! I would like to do 1 more long drive this season and for a variety of reasons want to stay in Canada. As I have been criticized for my crazy early starts, I am going to concede for a ...

Re: de-tuning a race engine

Jeff has very valid points, as the real world of traffic driving really does dictate what really works.

Even I had to de-tune my motor once I stopped racing, just to make in good in traffic and at stop lights. Nothing worse than a car that falls flat when you take off from a light.

Re: de-tuning a race engine

My engine is turbo-charged, a Frankenstein 2 litre, built to rev to 8,000+ RPM. Specialty uses JE forged pistons, custom designed for my application to deal with lots of heat on the piston tops, and the top ring land a bit down on the piston. Ring gap is critical. Crower forged connecting rods and t...

Re: de-tuning a race engine

As I said, HP does not come cheap, and hopefully with the right builder and $, you have RELIABILITY!

I won't say what my motor cost but I am into my 17th year with this thing and it has been used hard on occasion to say the least. Built right, good fuel and oil..and NEVER let it detonate.
