VG motor and trani compatibility
I’m curious if a VG 30 motor will couple to a 1971 510 auto trani?
If so has anyone done this?

Re: Q35DE
I am building the car for my wife and due to health issues I will need to go with an auto trani. I’m not concerned with having to modify the tunnel. I can do that. I had considered going with an LS2 but decided I didn’t want to have to cut into the firewall if I didn’t have to. It would fit width wi...

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
You are very correct.
I pulled the last bolt of the flywheel and it almost killed me. I expected it to stay put but it sure didn’t.

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
510 rob you were right.
I had a chance to pull the trani today and found that someone had left the spacer from an auto between the crank and the flywheel.
I removed it and reinstalled the original starter and was able to fire up the motor.
Thank you everyone for you help.

Re: Best fitting fender flares
Thanks for the heads up. I am not sure if I’ll leave them black or paint them body color.

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
Thanks for the advise. Probably won’t be able to get to it until next week. I’ll check it out. I have a car hoist and trani jack so may do it that way.

Re: Best fitting fender flares
I just purchased a set of the metal flares. It will take about a month to get. Glad to hear they fit well.

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
RMS That’s exactly my problem is the starter is not engaging the ring gear because it’s to far from the block. That’s why I was wondering if it was possible for the flywheel to be put on backwards. I can’t imagine anyone doing that but I’ve seen some dumb things before. I can see that the ring gear ...

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
I don’t think it’s a matter of a spacer left on the end of the crank. It may be hard to see in the first pic but there is a lip on the crank side of the flywheel which makes the ring gear set back away from the block. This lip is part of the flywheel and is visible in the first pic Is it possible to...

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
I am attaching a pic of the starter and also a pic of another motor I acquired that has the motor plate along with flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. I hope it is visible the difference between the pic form yesterday of the problem motor and the one posted today. It shows how much the ring gear is...

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
I will post a pic of the starter but don’t really think that’s the issue since the second starter that I tried came out of my other 510 and it works perfectly and engages correctly in that car. I will try to get a pic of the difference in the placement of the ring gears also. Just have to say Collin...

Re: Starter not engaging prperly
It’s not an electrical issue. I verified today that the starter is not engaging far enough to fully mesh with the ring gear. My other Datsun motor has the ring gear right at the engine side of the flywheel. This ring gear is set back approx 1/4” on the flywheel. I had tried to show that in the pictu...
