So..on Thursday, I get confirmation my waste gate is in Blaine, at our mail drop. Today, I decided that I will go across the border to get it, watching the line up issue all day, as we in Canada are coming off a long weekend.
I head to the Border after work, deciding to go the "commercial" crossing, as traffic looks a bit lighter. I pull into the main line up, which then breaks down into 4 lanes. Dice roll at that point, as to which might be faster . I have a motor home in front of me, family, could be an issue, but, they look innocuous. All three lines to my right seem to move quite fast. OK, bad call...Capt. Homeland security is REALLY scrutinizing his line. Next car gets the major, paper back and forth , discussion, consultation with other booth..who knows. Few more cars move through slowly, each one getting the third degree. Lines next to me move at 3 times the rate. 20 minutes into the line, finally the motor home gets his turn. Major third degree... I'm just nervous cause I hate this crap...

My turn, evil looking border guy..takes my passport..gets a funny look..asks me what I'm doing...how often do I go to the states.....what was I doing LAST weekend ( Winthrop drive )...then..proceeds to give me a the grief that my passport has EXPIRED.....HOLY CRUDMUCKER.....I mumble something...he looks like he is going for his gun...I'm wondering if the crash barrier in the G35 door will stop a 9MM Glock......he hands me back my passport, tells me NOT to come back with an expired passport again....and sends me on my way.......Where did 5 years go by? Bizarre thing is..last week, I crossed the Border..BOTH ways, and nobody said anything.

I get to my postal drop, pick up my waste gate...young guy behind the counter is a Datsun fan..I give him the Realm address..he is tickled. I now am sweating bullets about going back into Canada...KNOWING I have an expired passport.

I get to Border, hand him my passport, guy asks me what I did....I tell him..have invoice in hand.....he waves me through....

I have now had two mini heart attacks, thought I was going to be shot, my car confiscated...and i am now back in to the Great White North, waste gate in hand..no taxes, no duties......and one expired passport.....

Next week...off to renew....Saturday...hopefully install new waste gate....

That's funny Keith. I crossed the border both ways with NO PASSPORT a few months ago. Next time we get together remind me to tell you the story, you will laugh.

oh man, homeland security sure is sensitive.
In both cases, watch (feel) foe hauling between the two surface es as the plug starts to turn. If you fail the threads, your kinda SOL!

Keep us posted.
Well I didn't want to risk stripping the threads on either the case or plug, so I decided to sneak the oil in through the side door via the neutral safety switch. So I took the switch out, then took a transmission funnel and poked it through the already cracked shifter boot.
Image

The crazy straw portion of the funnel was a little wide so I cut some slits in the end so I could pinch it down and get it in the hole.
Image

All in all it took a while. The kink in the funnel's hose didn't help, but not a drop of it spilled.

Aw man, you gotta seal that thing up and stop the fumes from coming in. Believe me it make a huge difference!
This reminds me of the time years ago when I refilled the tranny using a tent pole and a funnel. :D

hahaha, I guess it wouldn't hurt. I just figured it smelled like exhaust because of the exhaust leak it has. I guess I've got another project on the list

This will be a classic tale of how things can creep up and you, and...it pays to look at things more than every 12 years. While I like to say I pride myself in my preventative maintenance schedule, this one just flew on by.
As I had mentioned, in the bright sunlight at Specialty, I noticed my waste gate had gone through the top part of the casting housing ( cast iron ) not good. On Saturday I took the car over to Specialty, to re and re the new waste gate in. Fortunately, TURBONETICS made a direct replacement for my old Delta gate II, which has been in service since 1984, and LAST looked at in 2002. Now this waste gate has been through a lot, hillclimbs, slaloms, some road racing, and of course thousands of high speed cruise miles, in the mountains of B.C...

In pulling the old unit out, we see that the cast iron housing has totally distorted. The valve seat is now elongated slightly, so the valve cannot seat properly and is held slightly open. This of course allowed a constant stream of exhaust gas to pass through, then over TIME, ate the side of the waste gate, and blowing a hole through the top, which is what I noticed.

The sad part, on MY part, is that I never really took notice of the lag, that was slowly creeping up. Funny enough, on this last drive, I did think to myself that the engine was running leaner, and, that it seemed to be taking a gnats eye brow longer to build boost. I should have paid attention to that.

To understand my blow through turbo system, is that under slight load and throttle, there should be pressure in the airbox. I noticed that it seemed not to be there to the same degree. REDFLAG...should have addressed that. The problem, now that we have the thing apart, is that I was bypassing enough exhaust gas to not allow the turbine to build pressure..NOT boost, but just air pressure. This of course affects my jetting, as years of development on my weber 32/36 attest. On the drive back from Winthrop, I did notice that I seemed to be slightly lean, more than usual.

Long story short, this has been creeping up, as the valve body became more distorted, and the valve was just open off the seat more. I could not have saved the body, no matter what, but, it would have kept the engine in it's ballistic state for boost. I have destroyed one cast iron manifold, as the turbo heat and weird exotic fuel mixtures I have run over the years, just ate the first one. This is the last of the factory manifolds on my car now, so next phase will be a custom manifold, when this one is done.

The amount of cast iron corrosion was amazing, in the waste gate housing, you can only imagine the velocity of gas going through it, at temperatures in excess of 1,300 F in my case..over TIME!

Luckily, the flange on the manifold was still sound, with little distortion, so I was able to put a new gasket in, which incorporates a fire ring, so I should be ok. I have a tough time getting one of the bolts tight, due to space limitations, it might be a two person job.

I took the car for a TD out from Specialty..HOLY COW BATMAN..boost right away, and I could see that airbox pressure will be up at part throttle, high speed cruise again. It got scary fast again. The new waste gate body is made out of a high temp stainless steel alloy, so this should be better in the long term.

So, if you know your car, and SOMETHING does not seem right.....IT'S NOT!!!! Things deteriorate over time for sure, and it sure can be subtle. I would suggest that this had been terminally bad for over two season's now, likely 3 for sure.

Here are some pictures and some of Collin's vintage ATLANTIC car, he has almost finished restoring. Andy had made all the new suspension pieces and nickel plated them.

MORE..

These pictures, if you look at the edges near the port, show the extreme corrosion of the cast iron, where the gasket mating surface was getting very thing.

Collin's Atlantic, won championships here.

For safety reason's, Andy has redone all the suspension arms and pivots.

After 20 years, new shoes. Brand new in the box carol shelbie rims on new 13" tires. Literally brand new, had been in the box forever. Also noticed my rear passenger sway bar bolt broke off at some point :( and one of my calipers is seized up on front pass side, so now i have to take up to dan hart and have him to some work for me.
