This will read more like what I did WITH my car this past summer of 2017, a review if you will.
I walked into the back of my plant in March to begin the season prep, the engine hour meter showing, 1,045.2 hours, 357.5 hours in this engine now, built in 2002.
Brakes were the priority, new pads all around, a #93 compound recommended by BRAKE MAN, new front rotors, sand the heck out of the rears, re-pack front bearings and new seals. I can only say I am totally happy with the pads, I told him the type of driving I am doing now and went with his choice. Very little dust, work when cold, and when heated up, which this past season never really tested the upper limit, were beyond adequate. Very good lineal feel too.
I ended up with replacing all my methanol solenoids, as they had died over the past two seasons, something I really was amiss to check. Wow have those solenoids gone up in price since I built that system many, many years ago.
In April I was onto the engine bay, tracking down some rattles and such. One major rattle was my genuine asbestos covered heat shield for my intake manifold, heat and vibration having worn the mounting pop rivets so they were loose as hell. I had a small leak from my steering box which was the oil creeping up the threads on one of my sockets head screws, some Teflon tape fixed that.
Middle of April had me removing the air box over the carb, checking out all the screws and stuff on the carb. In September of 2016 I put my “race” carb back on the car, after Specialty had milled a proper venture into the secondary bore. I finished 2016 with the thought that I need to lean the secondary out more. I used to run a massive jet in there and now brought it down to 2.10 MM. I could not be happier with the carb now, it just works everywhere, whereas before, if I jumped on it at low rpm, there was quite the bog due to the lack of a good signal when the secondary opened.
At the end of April I had re-painted the front grill, bezels and mirror. It seemed this spring everything I touched led to another project, the odd day it was WTF! I went to bleed the brakes, the rear specifically, where I have the BMW 2002 front calipers on there. Each caliper has 3 bleed nipples on it and they have all suffered wear over the last 40 years. Through this site and a BMW mechanic friend I was able to track down new bleed nipples, taking another 2 weeks to finish up that project.
The first week of May had me lighting the motor off in a heart beat, yet a few weeks later I was going to be haunted by a starting issue, another WTF.
A week before the Knox Mountain Hillclimb had me doing a test drive over to Specialty, bedding in the brakes on the way there and back. I get some good country roads and ramps on that drive, so it was fun to experience the acceleration again! I drove home just to get some seat time, with the car NEVER missing a beat when it came to starting.
My car now has an indicated 94,432 miles on the chassis. I blazed over to Byrons for 510 Day, one final test drive before heading to Knox.
May 20th I took the car to my daughters place, storing it in their garage overnight, for the 4:00 Am leave. My wife drives me over there, I quietly sneak into the garage, trying to not make any noise in the dead quiet neighbourhood. Car starts just fine and I have a nice cruise out to #1, where Greg and Jamie will be waiting. We go to leave the side of the highway and my car does not even crank……ARG!!! WTF. The guys bump start me and away we go. I am now paranoid for the rest of the day as to why it did that. It did not miss a beat for the rest of the day, but, each time I shut it off I was worried.
May 28th I went to Specialty, cleaned the bugs from the car and changed diff and trans oils. I also checked out all connections..AGAIN. Last year was the starter motor issue and I had gone over EVERYTHING then, even replacing a battery ground in the trunk.
June the 5th had those new #1157 bulbs show up and I checked all systems for the upcoming drive to Penticton. I had wanted both go to the big car show there and meet my long time friend and hang out.
I roll the car again into my daughters garage for the night, I have planned a 4:30 Am leave time, both to get an empty highway and be at the opening of registration at 8:30.
My wife again drives me over at 4:00 AM.
I put my day pack into the car, push it out into the lane….and hit the key…..NOTHING!!!!! ARG!!!! You have to be kidding me! The car has not missed a start since first firing for the season, at least a dozen times, and now it decides to kick me in the ass. Holy Mother of God Crudmucker!
I go into panic of course; I try to push start it, no way as the lane has a slight uphill edge to it. Crud, then I see the house lights come on, my son in law has heard the doors open and close, and the trunk lid, as I try to make sure battery connections good. He comes down and fortunately, years ago, I gave him one of the jump starting battery packs for Christmas, he drags it out, I hook it up…WHAM the car starts! I’m all apologetic that this has happened and borrow the battery pack for the trip to Penticton. I had one of the best drives this day, car does not miss a beat. I had no traffic up, great day in the sun, then on the way back have a bit of a slice and dice with a ZO6 on the Hope Princeton.
The beginning of July had me replacing the battery, which had a bad cell for sure and after a lot of complaining, the guy warranted it for me at no cost. Car has started just fine since.
July 29th had Norm, Greg, Dean, Matt and I blasting down to Fort Casey, again having ZERO traffic for the drive down, what a hoot we had. Great day with great company.
Aug 19th had James, Robyn and I heading to Cypress Mountain for the Road & Track photo article, fun morning it was.
Aug.26Th I went for a nice sunny day drive over to Specialty and adjusted the valves. I try and do that once a season depending on hours running.
My goal this year was to drive 2,000 miles and if people could come, great, if not, I was going myself. I thought too this year, that September should be another big drive, not wait till October, as the weather really has changed. I did make a good decision there, as the beginning of October it really did deteriorate.
Sept 16th had Norm, Dean, Greg, Jonathan and I hit the road for Winthrop, Washington. A really early leave time from the Border was the plan and did that ever work out well! Best drive in years in its own way, the twisty’s were clear of traffic and we had some truly great sections all to ourselves and more than tested the cars suspension’s. And again, just a super group of friends to drive with. That is a big issue really, a group of drivers that “get” the flow. Over the years we have had some real bone heads show up and make some really dangerous moves. We did a 420 mile day that put some big smiles on our collective faces. Weather could not have been more perfect also, a temperature that was great for the motors.
Sept 22nd I blasted over to Specialty again, major bug clean and took some time to back blow the radiator and fans out. It’s amazing at 180KMH how the bugs can get just creamed into those radiator fins.
Oct 9th was our final drive of the season, the Thanksgiving Classic Cruise to the Squamish Gondola. A cool but sunny day to finish things off.
I did a total of 2,263 miles and put 46 hours running time on the engine, basically double from years past. I will now change the oil and filter, do a nut and bolt check and get ready for winter and spring projects. I got a larger diff cover like Norms and that will go on in the spring. I am also upgrading my headlights, they should be in at the end of November, a project I should have done long ago. As our trips now start so early, and sometimes finish in the dark, good lights are a must. I’m hoping Byron will give me a hand as I have never done this and he has made some amazing upgrades. As I am so very close to retirement these are the final two things to do other than routine maintenance.
Next year I would like to do the full loop of the drive to Winthrop, then over to the Okanagan Valley, up to the Border, then, back down through Keremeos and the Hope/Princeton, THAT would be an epic drive!
