Byron510 wrote:It’s funny how few of these pans are still left on 510’s! If the pan survived the first oil change, it usually was removed when the sway bar was replaced for the performance oreintated driver. The clip the slid under the sway bar mount the held the captive nut which secured the back side of the pan usually didn’t get reinstalled.

Ive been told by many that the installation of the pan does significantly help cooling. But I think most have upgraded to more efficient rads today, with aluminum rads being so common place now.

Nice project just the same Lou, thanks for sharing. Looked like at least a 2 beer job :-)

Thanks Byron, 2 beer job? Dude I'm not that quick. It was more like a,,,,hell I forgot musta been a lot of beer job 8>) The pans also help with sucking heat out from the engine bay along with running cooler like you said I was once told. But like you said "more efficient aluminum rads today"

Got busy with the angle grinder and a cutting wheel today. Not much of the 510 left

Finished installing the drivers side Datsport weather seal. This one went on much easier than the first interns of how I applied the glue. Glad its over and on to the next thing.

Bled my brakes yesterday, thanks to my son's help. Cleaning up the rear BMW calipers and going to try some caliper paint, as these things get a patina of rust on them every time I wash the car. Don't worry...no Hot Pink colour either, just a nice neutral silver. Going to try the Dupli-Colour paint on ceramic, say's it's good to 500F, which with our drives these days, will never see that temp at the rear sustained.

Then it is test my methanol injection system and I am good to go for the season.

My tires are getting down there and I will see if they can stand up to one more summer, I do have a new set ready to go if needed, thanks to Norm. As I have rotated the tires, I have actually gotten pretty even wear, all things considered.

Today I found more rust.

Think I might need to find new quarter window frames.

Painted my front replacement bumper and installed. Also installed lower splash/Belly pan I modified to protect the SR oil pan. It isn't a rock guard but more for keeping the front of the pan from getting bombarded with road debri as it's so exposed up front.

Put my new O2 sensor in today. Painted rear brake calipers last week. Just have to purge methanol and test the system and the car should be ready roll. New Yokohama 048's mounted, nice and sticky again.

Technically this was yesterday.

Took the latest project car to my favorite painter. Mark Ross.

That's Mark in it. He just couldn't wait to get in and drive it around. He's done all of my Datsun projects for several years.

And because I know you HAVE to know the color, it's staying baby poop brown. It's code 906 . One of the threads here about colors shows a chart where 906 is described as "Gold" but even in the protected areas where the paint looks original, I cannot see anything but baby poop. Maybe caring for my new grand daughter has permantely altered my opinion of 'brown'.

Other interesting points if note. I got a "in-transit" permit to drive it to the paint shop. Notice its in the bottom right corner of the windshield as it should be. The fact that the windshield is gorilla taped into the frame is another interesting point of note. Do not judge the ride height either. It will not be a slammed sled, but with virtually no weight in the car, the rear is a tad high.

Made a bracket for my IC to mount too with the help of my friend Scott Dart. Marked the holes to drill for the radiator. Need to get some rubber washer and shorter bolts to mount to the IC and radiator.

Had enough of looking at my messy engine bay, tore out the engine harness, rebuilt it. Stripped all the junk out. And blew out the battery tray.

Murphy kinda let me alone yesterday as I tested my methanol injection system. I did have to remove the inter-cooler just to be SURE that my Lo injector was working. I could not hear it "clicking" so I needed to see FLOW. I really do need to revamp that system to make it more user friendly when it comes to checking it out after sitting all winter. My water sprayers also had no issue, so at this point wheels can go back on, car back on the ground and ready to roll. Must get insurance, do that May 1st and that gets me to November and hopefully some good drives and events.

Just in case you missed it, Richard is holding a impromptu All Japanese Classic meet up this weekend - might be a good excuse to get insurance earlier.

Today? Nothing other than drive it to work. Yesterday I unloaded the 510 and washed it after a 2540 mile round trip drive to the Mitty. If you wern't there YOU MISSED IT!!!! it was awesome with perfect weather, great racing, fun interactions with John Morton and Adam Carolla not to mention seeing John racing the BRE Z. It was like stepping back in time.
