The 510 Realm

Added some freshly powder coated 15" turbo Z rims with a better offsets than the prior Panasports, and some fresh Toyo R1R sticky's in 195/50-15.

Even had some purdy "Datsun" stickers to hide the unsightly "Z" emblem on the center caps.

My son has signed up for the Sunday autocross at the Calgary airport. You should drop out and run those sticky tires. I'm sure he would like to see another 510 there. Justin would be easy to spot. Last time I think he was the oldest car by over 20 years.

Now there's a good idea! Haven't done that in a really long time.

Drove the 510 over to Andy's yesterday for a look over and TD.

As I suspected, and the Innovate LC-1 did kick up an E-8 code, the sensor was faulty out of the box! FYI...the Innovate would go through the heat cycle, then the first blip of the throttle had the light go right to dead rich...second blip had it go dead lean....then a quick random reading...then the E-8 code would just keep flashing. The new sensor was sure crisp again, I did put too many hours of leaded fuel through it. It just got lazy in it's reaction to throttle and I did think it was maybe reading off a tad too.

Car sure felt small in traffic on HWY 99 what with today's vehicles all around, but, it sure was nice to just breath on the throttle and away it went. BOOST IS GOOD!

I performed an extraction!

Last year I noticed a haze of oil over the starter, wiring in that area, the coil, and of course the lower frame rail. I checked all my oil lines, valve cover gasket, etc. Could not see any reason for it.

The other day, when replacing the O2 sensor, out in BRIGHT SUNLIGHT, I could trace the haze up to the top of my catch can, and the Aeroquip fitting which leads to my valve cover breather. The Teflon tape had totally deteriorated, letting the oil wick up and out ! The simplest thing yet I did not notice it until that bright light. I am going to do a power wash on the engine bay soon, before our first road trip coming up.

Removed the AN fitting yesterday and cleaned the dead Teflon tape out of the threads, the oil sure had made it go weird. Did a nice triple wrap with fresh tape and made sure it really was tight in the bung.

Really an End to an Era yesterday, virtually cleaned out the last of my 510 related stuff from work, a place where I was lucky enough to be able to run my race program and store my car for 34 years out of. I will miss my "garage" space for sure. After 48 years in my Industry it was time to pull the pin from what turned out to be a career, that I could never have imagined in 1969/70 at the ripe age of 19. Time for a new phase!

Trick now is to not get kicked outta the house for being home all the time

I have so much to tidy up it is unreal, you should see my basement now! Too many hobbies that require "gear", let alone the car related stuff.

Yesterday I fired the 510 up, both to check the battery and to keep the cam oiled. It lit right off so that was good, specially after last years fiasco with what turned out to be a bad battery cell.

As we have a good drive planned on July 21st I am going to take the car for a bit of a small run before that. I need to burn up the fuel in my small auxiliary tank as it has not been refreshed in a few years, just did not need to use it.

What kind of battery are you running Bert? I am up against a dead Optima and don't know which way to go. Car is just run 6 months out of the year.

For the most part, I just use a conventional lead acid battery. I do use a battery maintainer on it year round.

When I looked at the cost of the Optima batteries, and they do seem to be made not as good as the originals, I just decided to stick with the norm. I get about 5 years out of a battery, that being said, I did have to warranty the last two lead acid that lasted 3 years each before the bad cell issue.

As with any lead acid battery in race car use, the vibration and g-loading is not easy on them. Plus..batteries are just not made as well as I grew up with. I use a Honda Civic size battery as it is not stupidly heavy and has more than enough cranking power to start my 10:1. My charging and ignition system is also ok, so it does light off very easily.

Thanks, yeah I got only 3 years out of this one....very disappointing given the cost.

That kinda seems to be the norm now, manufacturing moved to Mexico and something got cut in production quality. In a quick search failures are common in a 2-3 year time frame.

I know that has been the experience at Specialty also, which is why I have just stuck with conventional. I know also that Andy stepped up to a lithium battery for the GT-1 car, but the cost is just crazy for most of us.

Took my fresh build on a 230mi round trip today. Passed with flying colors! Only had 140mi on the clock to start the day. Really looking forward to that 500mi break-in oil change so I can finally give it some stick!
