Ahh, I've seen this car before, it's a nice '68 with gobs of rust on the bottom 8" of the car, it'll need some serious body/structural work to bring it to a safe driver status ....

Jason and I looked at that car, and were going to buy it - then it dissapeared with no explanation from the owner...

It was really rough, but the serial number is for real.

Although NZ built cars generally didn't have firewall stampings, I believe I have won with my old P510-000187 car. :-) No it's not the oldest, but it does have the lowest number.

Why it has such a ridiculously low number ona 72 I don't know, the paperwork says that it's had that VIN since 1972 as well, so it can't be a plate-swap deal. Very strange.
The IDx 10 concept is based on the 510 in the same way that the urinating I was doing last night was based on a 30 yr old single-malt scotch.

Byron,
You posted up a 4 door VIN# PL510 034091 as a 1968.

I have a 2 door VIN PL510-032978 that was titled as a 1969. It as the smaller tail lights, the early wiper swing pattern and no rear side markers lights like a 1968 would have. I always thought the 2 door started in 1969, but at VIN# PL510-032978 is it a 1968?

Could be a VIN swap, but Nissan didn't coordinate VINumbering outside of the Japanese factory very well, if at all. 510s were built across the globe, in full factories or from completely-knocked-down kits. Maybe the Aus. market used CKD early on, then changed over to a factory?

Hi Dave,
That sounds correct. And there were 2 door 68's in the USDM only. As far as I have been able to research, no other market including us Canadians next door got the 2dr model until the 69MY.

Many 68's were registered in 69, but they are unmistakably 68's due to the wipers and small tail lights. - hard to fake those. Also the dash and the complete wiring system are unique to the 68MY.

I guess what you could have is one of the easiest 2dr cars, it would be interesting to see what the lowest 2dr VIN number is, might be worth a thread on its own.

No way to translate the database to the offerings of Google blogs, AFAIK. I'm sure Sebastian still has the information somewhere.
