I suspect that is to drive some sort of rally computer like a Halda Twinmaster, but have never seen a setup like this before.

These old photos are great, it’s so awesome to see new photos of these cars. And the new 68 rally car is so cool. Man... thanks so much for posting!

I have a twin master just like the one shown above. But I bought a speedometer cable “T”, and drive mine off there. Back in the days when taxi cabs still used mechanical systems, the stuff was available. Not sure about today, but I still have my twin master and a bag of brass gears for it.

When the hell did I forget how much fun it is to play in the dirt and made me think freeway on-ramps and paved twisty roads were so 'right' '? What Gezibel blinded me to that nirvana and seduced me into paved wickedness? Arghhhh I've been hood winked!

I'm jacking up my coil overs and puttin' on the knobbies right now and going for a blast. Wait, the dirt is all covered in this white crap. And it's cold. And I'm old. Soon my pretty, soon...

South African rally champion Ewald Van Bergen was quite successful in Bluebird SSS 510s:

Some SCCA Pro Rally action in the desert. Judging by the sticker on the fender this was the Mini-Price Nevada Rally.

This site has a collection of pix from SCCA pro events in the early '70s -- Michigan area, POR, etc. Amateur photos credited to “McMahon” with lots of beat and battered cars, 510s among them.

Byron's comment got me thinking about this. Why did folks bother with such an elaborate-- and fragile-- system of connecting the drive to their front wheel, externally, if they could have just run it off a "tee" from the speedo drive? My guess is that there was far too much wheelspin, at least in some parts of some rallys, for the speedo drive to be remotely accurate. Running the equipment off the car's front wheel must have been much more stable and accurate.

Am I on the right track here?
