Some background, I have a 4 door 510 with a stock L16, the whole car was stock when I received it down to the dog dishes and whitewall tires except for a 5 speed transmission. I have driven this car to and from work for about a year and a half now and recently my rear main seal let go all over my clutch and I've been revmatching 2nd gear so long I forgot what it feels like to drive a car with a synchronized transmission. I decided to replace the clutch and rebuild the transmission. I had purchased a rebuild kit for the common z 5 speed tranny (FS5W71B), assuming thats what the previous owner installed.
Welp, lo and behold I go under there today to find what looks like an FS5C71A with L series bellhousing! AKA an early 240z EDM 5 speed.

I have decided it might be better for me financially to pick up a junkyard FS5W71B and use the rebuild kit I already have.
Anyone got any ideas on what this transmission might be worth when factoring the tired synchros? I think they are like 100 bucks each now!

Here is a photo of inside the fill plug, you can see the synchros are buzzed off where the dog is supposed to grab it

And here is a photo of what it should look like! This is my fathers freshly rebuilt one for his U20 roadster but he wont give it to me!!

The tranny's value likely has more to do with the gear set and the condition of those gears than anything else. But being that you've been driving it around, it's unlikely that it's a close ratio box, which would be worth the most.

So you have a valid question - what is it worth.

It's do a gear check first, get the ratio's then work out from there.

Byron thanks for the reply!
As you said, I probably would have noticed driving it if it was a Nismo Ultra C/R gearset, especially with my 3.54 rear end, the close ratio box would be like taking off in 2nd gear!
This is why I believe it is a regular gearset out of an EDM 240z with the following ratios:
1. 2.957 2. 1.858 3. 1.311 4. 1.000 5. 0.852
anyone idea on its value would be appreciated, not sure if its viable for me to rebuild it.

If it's not one of the steel-syncro close-ratio comp boxes, it's worth whatever a 5-speed is worth. To us. Maybe there's a huge demand for EDM 5-speeds in the 240Z forums. Not sure we'd know.

If I remember correctly the 240Z 5 speed was a dealer or Motorsports option in North America. It should be a "L" series bell housing on a late U20 Roadster 5 speed. U20 roadster 5 speeds are hard to find and even harder to get parts for so it should be desirable to some person ... A Z car guy would probably pay the most for it, but, it's really a core at this point ...

Thanks for your input guys, I feel like this transmission might be more valuable to a Roadster/Z guy than me, so I think I might separate the transmission and bellhousing and try to sell them separately.

O.S. Giken dual disc clutch/flywheel assembly. It's been sitting in the bottom draw of my tool box since '90, waiting for me to build my dream L-series motor some day.

Need to verify the ratios, but it was supposedly the close-ratio O.D. comp trans. Has the steel syncros. Had it briefly in my 510 back in '89. 1st gear seemed a bit taller than the truck 5-spd & all the gears were nicely spaced apart, not the noticeable 2nd to 3rd drop. The top of the bell housing has 7109692 stamped in it. Tail shaft has 90220 stamped in it. Been sitting in the shed/garage since '89/90.

I have a NOS radiator core support that I bought from Mario Lozano several years ago. Also I have a NOS SSS Rear Bumper and license plate light to match. NOS L&R window regulators. I'll try and get some pics if I can find the time to dig the stuff out of my garage...

I've just collected an NOS O/S rocker panel. Labelled as a Datsun 1600 (UK/OZ) part. Might not be genuine Nissan/Datsun, but a rare find over here.

Is a speedo with a tripometer rare? I bought one used maybe 10 years ago.
