Update -- since this was many years ago....Derek wrote:Derek Young
26 years of age
I live in downtown Vancouver (downtown east side!) in an artist live/work building with my girlfriend of 6 years. My "garage" consists of 2 underground parking spots in 2 different buildings.
I have an engineering degree, but for money I build props (mechanical fab/machining/electronics/CAD/CAM etc) for movies/tv at a shop in my neighbourhood and get paid occasionally for other things (fighting robots, renting things I own to the movies, selling stuff I make). I also make furniture and sculpture.
On my 3rd 510 since 1998, currently own a white 72 4 door, 200#/" coilovers all around, GC camber plates, TMC f/r sway bars, adjustable shocks, 15x6" panasports w 195/45-15 Kumho 712s. Currently rockin' a borrowed (thank Byron) stock L16, while I build my a mild race prepped EFI L18. The paint (aside from the engine bay) is rough and one fender has the one of the worst bondo jobs ever (I didn't do it), but it is from California and it isn't rusty, so that's what's really important. Really hoping to have the new motor in and running for auto-x season next year (FSP ahoy!)
I also have a 1992 NX2000 which is fun for a FWD car, and it is a good car to take up the mountain to go snowboard riding.
Now very nearly 30, living in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco California with my girlfriend of 10 years now (!). Paying $300 a month to house my 510 tarmac rally car and my 1991 BMW 318is grocery getter. I also have a $300 1987 Crown Victoria that stays mostly down by my work in Menlo Park (that I get to by train) for use as a lunch mobile. It is capable of taking 8 people and 2 dogs out to lunch!
I work at an automation (robotics) company designing cool bits and pieces for use in laboratory automation. And all our stuff looks cool -- as even scientists want a trick looking work place.
Still have the same 510, but it is now EFI L18 powered and was built up and completed (first 510 ever to do so) Targa Newfoundland in 2007. It (and my wallet) are now taking a much needed break, and I will get back to racing in 2008 -- focusing on hillclimbs and one tarmac stage rally in Idaho in June.
Oh yeah, be on the look out for the next Dime Quarterly where my car is the featured reader's 510!

I am an old guy who used to race SCCA, CSCC, IMSA and the Trans-Am series. I am retired and live in Salem, Oregon
I have owned and raced a Volvo 544, 3 510's, BMW 2002, Lotus/Buick, 240Z, 2 280Z's, Chevron/BMW and a Mercedes-Benz 450SL Trans-AM.
I have a restored '71 240Z that I am very proud of. I took it all the way down to the shell, rotisseried it, painted it, plated everything, powdercoated everything, put it all back together with new upholstery and new chrome and it looks like a new car. It has a 3.0 ZX motor with a R200 L/S, ZX 5-speed, CV half shafts and 4-wheel Corvette brakes. I store the car and never drive it when it rains. It is a "trailer queen".
All of my 510's were fast race cars. I decided I wanted a stock 510 tudor to drive. I bought the car on eBay and drove it about a month. It had been sitting under a tree for 10 years w/o the engine before I bought it. I decided this was the car to restore. I totally disassembled the car and put the shell on a rotisserie. It is now being rust repaired and painted by the same guy that did my '71 240Z. I have purposely left everything stock in the running gear. I bought new rotors, drums, calipers, brakes cylinders and lines. I even have the old caliper dust covers NEW! I have had everything powdercoated except the R160, gas tank and the rear cross member. The front and rear suspension is all together and waiting to be installed on the 510.
I built a strong engine with all of the "stock" components. It is a numbers correct 510. It is a bit larger than stock and runs 10:1 compression. I have ported the head, put in larger valves and the biggest stock cam Nissan made. I have ported the exhaust manifold. I am running a 'stock' Hitachi 2-BBL. All of the aluminum parts have been vibratory polished so they look new. The engine and tranny are ready to be installed.
I have a set of 15X6.5 Wantanabe wheels for driving and the stock 13" wheels and stock hubcaps for show.
I hope to have the car finished by Canby, 2008.
