Dime Quarterly ending

Post by brknrekord »

Last night as I began to read the most recent issue of The Dime Quarterly, "As DQ ends" caught my eye and my heart sank. While I have been quite the slacker as far as MY dime goes the last few years with buying the house, excuses, excuses :D The Dime Quarterly along with Time and This Old House are the only three publication I subscribe to, with DQ being my absolute favorite to find in the mailbox.

So I would like to express my thanks to you Julian, along with everyone else who has contributed to its publication over the years. It will be greatly missed and your efforts in keeping it alive for so long are greatly appreciated.

I hope that we as a community will again be so lucky as to have such a publication in the future. Only time will tell. When the time comes, I will write the first article, and it will be about every possible mistake that can, and I have made :)

Thanks again Julian and all of DQ!

Couldn't agree more. The DQ was(is) a monumental job and could always be counted on like the sun coming up in the morning. It will be missed more than you know. Your 510 knowledge and pithy comments on here were both accurate and entertaining and I for one miss seeing them. Where ever you are, or whatever your situation, I wish you well in the future.

the simple wire diagrams were awsome and some other HOW TOs

Hopefully the smarter 510 owners saved these links and printed them also.
Never assume the weblink will be there forever and always print it up and put in a note book.

Im sure Okayfine just said hell with it, like Ray Johns. Time to move on.
maybe cost,time ect....

I second Mike's sentiments, the DQ was something I looked forward to reading and I'll be mining the back issues for years as I work on the Datsuns ... Thanks Julian and all the crew at DQ!

Julian used to be an animal on this forum. I enjoyed his posts. What happened to him?

I think he got tired of being attacked as a result of his "style" of writing about issues.
One particularly nasty attack by the push-button engine start kit guy, was the last straw.
Julian was open and honest, and some people can't handle that.
By the way, that dude seems to have disappeared as well!

Just as you guys said, thanks Julian, Randy, Sebastian for the years of DQ. Last I heard their was only a little over 100 subscribers to the DQ, not enough to make it fly long term. And also not enough contributors on the articles, lack of material in general. Some of my thoughts on this; I fine it pretty bad that a typical 510 owner can't spend a lousy $15.00 for a DQ subscription, but then wants someone to scan their copy of an article for the information they need, all when the then said owner is installing a SR20DET in his car. Because of the internet, I guess that all info should be free? Second, the lack of material, if a lot of the owners would document their work and write an article and summit it to the DQ it would have helped a bunch. I know that it takes time to stop and take pictures and then write what you did. I have been forcing myself to document all the work that I have been doing. I have submitted material to the DQ that wasn't in the best written form, but with their great editors, they put it into fine form. Hell , with the fine documented project builds on the Realm, I think that some of the owners could be talked into submitting material for a DQ.
So, with the ending of the DQ, what would be the best why to have a replacement for it? Is print just dead, in this internet age? How about a subscription based web magazine/newsletter for 510's or one that might branch out to include other vintage datsuns. What says you?

It's one thing if the DQ dies. But, to not have Julian resurface in some other way, and just disappear is not good. He was/is an incredible resource and would be a terrible loss to the community, more so, imho than just DQ.

Its only the paper issue of DQ that is dying. The new DQ Blog will continue.

Julian is still providing lots of input over at the 'new' DQ Blog, so I don't think we need to worry about him, but yes, he was an incredible resource and source of entertainment here at the Realm. Maybe he will come back someday. Until then, you can still follow his Whitebird build and assorted stories over at DQ along with input from other great guys like Sebastian Hill, Micheal Spreadbury, Randy York, Kelvin Dietz and others who are dedicated to our community.

DQ's esteemed proofreader and contributing editor Mr. Fant linked me to this thread. I thought I'd pipe in since DQ is a topic near and dear to my heart.
brknrekord wrote:So I would like to express my thanks to you Julian, along with everyone else who has contributed to its publication over the years.
You, and all the DQ subscribers over the years, are very much welcome. It was a pleasure and an honor to first write for, then become editor of, DQ. Some people thought we'd covered everything there was to cover by volume 6. I'm very happy to have proved them incorrect.
brknrekord wrote:I hope that we as a community will again be so lucky as to have such a publication in the future. Only time will tell. When the time comes, I will write the first article
I do, however, find it somewhat ironic that you made this sentiment, given the situation DQ finds itself in. DQ is only ending because people willing to contribute articles have faded into obscurity. If you and others who have topics to write about had written about them, I'd be planning DQ 13.1, instead of wrapping it all up with DQ 12.4.
banzai510(hainz) wrote:Im sure Okayfine just said hell with it, like Ray Johns.
DQ ending is nothing like FTA's end, or even the first "sale" of FTA. Ray got bored and moved beyond 510s, so he decided to dupe his then-editor to "buy" FTA. I've done everything to avoid a repeat of FTA's lack of quality, lack of timeliness, lack of content, and lack of notice regarding the end. If there were enough people still contributing content to DQ, this wouldn't be a topic of conversation.
two_68_510s wrote:I think he got tired of being attacked as a result of his "style" of writing about issues.
Believe it or not, DQ's end and my absence from The Realm are unrelated. While Joel is correct in that the push-button-start thread was the cause of my leaving The Realm in March, it wasn't because of that tool of an OP with the quick temper and flair for the drama. It was more because he threatened violence upon another member of this forum (uh, me) and no one, aside from Joel, spoke out about it.

Moreover, people like TerryHackman were jubilant about the threats against me. He even PMed me a couple times with gems like this:
TerryHackman wrote:I am glad Dave said what he said... and yeas one day you will piss off the wrong person in Ca, an they'll probably have a gun. What part of FUCK OFF don't you understand?
The crass disregard for my life Terry displayed in the thread and via PM, nevermind the three-year-old immaturity, really put me off. Whether you agree with everything (or anything) I say, violence and the blatant threat of violence has NO PLACE in the 510 community or The 510 Realm itself.

AFAIK, we had/have 300+ subscribers, and have had +/- that number for more than a few volumes. Money is not the issue DQ is ending. We could publish for the foreseeable future with that number of subscribers. It's much easier when no one at DQ gets paid.

That said, www.dimequarterly.com has been mostly transitioned to the blog format. Google provides blog space for free, so we can load up the blog with most of the content that existed on the website. That should also be relatively stable. The Internet dying is about the only thing that's going to affect Google.

Sebastian has pared down DQ.com to lower the hosting fees so that he can retain the DQ Classifieds as they exist on DQ.com. There's no real way to recreate the DQ Classifieds on the DQ blog.
510wizard wrote:Second, the lack of material, if a lot of the owners would document their work and write an article and summit it to the DQ it would have helped a bunch.
As mentioned, THIS. We're living in a golden age of 510 modification. It seems antithetical that we should also be living in a dark age of 510 information.
510wizard wrote:So, with the ending of the DQ, what would be the best why to have a replacement for it?
I honestly doubt there will be another 510-centric publication. You just won't find enough people who will actually contribute to keep something like DQ going, as has been shown by the ending of DQ. I can have have written entire issues myself, but I can't keep that up over successive issues. I'm burning my own money on my own projects, and I have only so much money and so many projects to document. If there were enough people willing to subscribe to a year of a new quarterly publication at $45 or so, that itself could fund projects for projects' sake. But good luck at finding 510 owners willing to cough up that kind of jack. Lots of people have told me they just don't have/can't be bothered to spend $15 for a year of the old DQ.
510wizard wrote: How about a subscription based web magazine/newsletter for 510's or one that might branch out to include other vintage datsuns. What says you?
I like paper, but if there were something like that, of course I'd subscribe. That said, the joint-venture issues with other Datsuns (the Z-Car Mags of the '90s, Nissport, etc.) have never featured much 510 content and very little 510 technical content. My last look through Nissport didn't have any 510 content but did have something about a Titan exhaust. Or bra kit, I forget.

DQ ending isn't such a big deal. 510 enthusiasm dying is a huge deal. I don't think those two concepts are unrelated.

I am glad you found my irony. But you cant take it out of context. It would be an article about all the mistakes I have made, which are mostly from poor planning which is covered gloriously in your how to plan/ complete a project article.

I have not been on here in quite some time. Shitty to hear about the threats of violence. That is rediculous and uncalled for.

All the same, mistakes and learning from them is half the reason I developed the "Reader's Project" series, so people could see how a finished car is actually finished. It doesn't go in a garage one day and come out perfect the next. In effect, it's ALL about the process, unless you just throw a chunk of money at a shop - and then's it's just all about THEIR process. When it comes down to it, there's never going to be too many lessons learned, so never too many articles about lessons people learned.

Until such time as there is another 510-centric publication (in dead-tree format, virtual, or what-have-you), feel free to write up what you've accomplished, worked on, or learned along the way and I'll link it from the DQ blog.
