Perma-coil makes some good inserts. Make sure they are stainless.

I find Keenserts to be a far more robust solution than Helicoils.Mattndew76 wrote:I will price a pack of helicoils. Time serts are looking spendy as well, but I will look into them.

I'm checking them out. I noticed I have to tap a 3/4-10 pilot to insert a 12x1.75 ID thread for the link I posted earlier. May need me to redo some inner profiles for more material.

I've thought of another idea....they are called blind threaded inserts. Basically it is threaded insert that is installed from the back side. You drill a hole and it is press fit with a knurl that will keep it from turning. Being press fit and a dab of Loctite. Would be easy to do. Either way would be good. And being installed from the back it would be stronger than the regular insert. And you probably wouldn't have to change your current format. You would be compressing the mustache bar and housing together instead of pulling on the housing. Just a thought..

I convert all my R160 diffs to bolts from studs. Any reason the bolt holes need Heli Coil inserts (et. al)? Stock cover is threaded for 1.5mm pitch bolts and the threads have held up for me. Now, I don't pull diff covers every season, but I have had the current cover out of the car (on the current diff, and the one before - same cover) four or five times in 8 years. No issues. Use Loc Tite, an appropriate torque value and save some coin (and Matt some code)?funwithmonkeys wrote:I would agree. I think it would be worth a bit more to me not to have to real with the studs anymore.

All of these are great ideas but it's will add to the $$ figure for the covers. The threaded pressed bushing from the reverse side is a good idea and can be done. Very unique. Gotta source a distributor or machine them myself, but again the $$ goes up. The M12 threads are very adequate for strength even if you are using bolts instead of studs.

I understand what you are saying but it does add more process time. Right now I have these set to the least amount of man hours to be able to offer them as 1/3 the price of a Cusco.upsman24 wrote:To protect your 350$ investment. Spend an extra 6$
I'm not apposed to doing the extra work, but it will be passed onto the bottom line. Machine rates are 100$ per hour

Without derailing Matt's thread too much, I have actually removed and retightened the bolts in my same OE R160 diff cover four or five times in 8 years. I've had zero issues.upsman24 wrote:To protect your 350$ investment.
$6 may cover the cost of a couple inserts, but there's more to it than the consumables. There's nothing stopping an individual buyer of one of Matt's billet covers from installing their own HeliCoil, et. al.

I have begun the process to lobby federal legislation requiring all modifications to holes be done by a trained machinist or machine shop of part origin. Thank you. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.00.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with the OE style holes. And it'd be waaay cheaper for somebody to install themselves.okayfine wrote:Without derailing Matt's thread too much, I have actually removed and retightened the bolts in my same OE R160 diff cover four or five times in 8 years. Got a good price quote on some 3/4-14 NPT brass plugs for the remote lines. Just needs a through hole a port tool and threads. Instant success.

I'd Keep it simple, as is.
Nobody else has thought to use metal inserts.
12x1.75 is coarse enough you get a pretty good bite...
