Those pictures are mine that I were taken on the first walk around.
I did read that rust is the enemy post, very insightful but also terrifying. You really don't know if the main structure is good unless you remove the body panels and I doubt the owner would appreciate that.
Great insight from everyone on here very impressed with the replies.
So if one was to buy one from far away how do you go about it? Find a friend ir someone on here in the area that knows datsuns to look at it for you? Or do you ask the owner for specific photos?

Re: Looking for 510 professionals
My brother had a car that was in similar condition - some mad man posted it for sale this week for $2000 more than he paid for it 2 years ago. I walked away from that car because it was cheaper to buy a non-running shell in better shape, and I started from there for him. In the end, way less time spent and a better outcome.
I too have fixed cars like this. In fact there are more body parts available today than 20 years ago. But maybe as time goes on, I'd rather be tuning mechanical parts than fixing rust any more. I'd still do it, if there wasn't an alternative. But there are still alternatives. Paint alone is $8-10k. Without bodywork, that is a good number to chew on for a bit. Now look at cars in the $6-10k range, and you'll find drivers that you can be proud of now.
My thoughts on the subject...

Lots of searching. It's probably not going to be quick, but contrast the couple of months of searching versus the couple years of rust repair.Dat_Life wrote:So if one was to buy one from far away how do you go about it? The Realm is pretty widespread and the number of Canada cars that have come up for sale and been supplemented here by posts from previous owners (or those knowledgeable about the car) always amazes me. Also, you'd never buy a car you couldn't get good information about, either from the Realm member selling it, a Realm member who knows about it or went and saw it for you, or from the seller himself. And even then you're not exchanging cash until you see the car.
There will be lots of people that try to sell cars with two sentences and a picture, if that. And there will be ads full of information, both words and pictures. 510s aren't as available as they used to be, but there are still enough around that, within reason, you have your choices.
It starts with your budget and your desires. Posting up that information to a WTB ad in the Classifieds will also help, but there isn't a substitute for hitting kijiji, Ratsun, etc. Feel free to post up potential cars and we can do this all over again.

Thanks for the tips. Well if that is the case I guess we'll be getting to know each other haha

I was wondering what you guys think that green 510 would be worth? (If at all).

Re: Looking for 510 professionals
Would need more pictures and description. From what you've shown it probably has more value in the bits versus as a driver. That rust could well be compromising structural parts of the car, specifically the rear suspension mounting.
I can see that you might be tempted at some reduced price, but even if the seller would knock off $1000 I wouldn't touch it and I'd recommend you didn't either, for the reasons already given in this thread. You start talking $1000-1500 for it as-is, then as a beater and something to skin your mechanical knuckles it starts to make a lot of sense.
But as a restoration project, no, not unless it's free and you LOVE rust repair. And probably not even then.

All the suspension was redone with fancy ground control coilovers. He says the suspension mounting points were clean. The floor under the carpet by the gas pedal and up near the dead pedal area all look clean from inside the car. And as I said before the engine bay and under the battery tray looks clean. Biggest issues are the body panels and rockers.okayfine wrote:Would need more pictures and description. From what you've shown it probably has more value in the bits versus as a driver. Tough to say really without removing the panels/ looking under the car. He has obo in the ad and he has been trying to sell it for a while and could be motivated.
But where the line between insulting low ball and reasonable offer is, I don't really know myself.

Re: Looking for 510 professionals
It's impossible to say with the pictures in this thread. But that picture of the passenger-side rocker makes the rocker look hashed. If it's bad enough for long enough, it'll have compromised the area where the rear suspension crossmember mounts to the chassis. Indy's car was like that. You'd have to pull the rear seat bottom out and have a look, then look underneath as well.
Like I said, it's probably worth more as parts. I don't understand sticking on coilovers to a car that rusty, but it's not the first. Doesn't change my opinion. Which is only mine.
You're not the first, this thread follows a similar arc:

But that's everything now. Suspension bolt on bits are a click away, arrives in a week or so. Rust-repair is years of your time and thousands of dollars. And THEN you have to paint it. The only shortcut to that is throwing $25,000 at Tyson.Dat_Life wrote:Biggest issues are the body panels and rockers.

Re: Looking for 510 professionals
Panel repair/replacement is very time consuming, and does get very expensive if you need to pay someone else to do the work. Tyson has done a great job on some local cars. His guys have the knowledge to do it right, and there are a few other guys out there as well. But few and far between. If the car is complete, and it's a runner, then leave it as is. You will still be able to enjoy driving the car. But I would look at this project as a parts car - unless you are a absolute gluten for punishment! There have been 2 documented builds on this site regarding repair of quite rusted cars. They were LABOUR INTENSIVE to say the least. One guy did it on a dare from his wife. That car was also a SK car, and I think the roof skin and parts of the cowl were all that remained intact (exaggerated but not by much). That was the most extreme repair I have seen. Next up was an entire floor pan replacement complete. Done by Tyson, the next most extreme job I have seen of rust repair on a 510.
If you are itching to jump in, buy it to drive as is. Have some fun with it. But look for a better car to start with if you want a nice solid driver in the end. Some advice from a guy who's fixed cars like the one you pictured.
Keep us posted.
