Need help please - measurement needed

Postby Rogue » 10 Oct 2015 16:16

I need 2 measurements of a 510 engine bay please.

1) I need the distance between the front frame rails

2) The distance between the shock towers directly above the frame rails

See attached photo for clarification.

(I stole this photo from the interwebs and doctored it up)

Thanks!

In line with the image you posted I measure about 25" between the rails and 29" over the rails. Hope that helps.

It's a bit difficult to get a measurement between the frame rails because the front rails are actually rather trapezoidal, not parallel. You can really only get widths for a specific location on the rail.

Yes, for the record, my measurements were at the same location as the lines in your image.

Awesome guys, thanks. Well, not awesome as this means the engine I wanted to install isn't even close to fitting. I'm parting out my 630whp STi and thought a 600+whp Suby motor would be fun.

It would be fun, and I have seen in one completed in Australia - 2Wd obviously. However, we have actually visited this option in the past. I took these measurements for a fella about 8 years ago wanting to do the same swap.

And the Aus. fella cut access panels in the inner fender wells to get to his spark plugs. OP, you can always convert the front to double wishbone and free up the strut tower area...

Or, get a wagon and mid-mount the engine behind the front seats, drive the rear wheels with the front wheel outputs in the trans, get a sandrail kit for the remote shifter, etc. No, I've never thought about that.

That might work well, weight is where it's supposed to be. You could also mount the motor 90 degrees to you position noted Julian, putting the motor behind the passenger seat, then drive one output shaft to the rear diff, drive the other fwd to the front diff and have an AWD 510 - haven't solved the 1:1 center diff in this program..... and I've never thought about this sort of thing either.

That AUS motor swap was an EJ20 ... that guy said all of the newer subie motors are even bigger, so they definitely won't fit

I like the mid-engine idea... but that is way more fabrication that I'm willing to do at this point. Also, I think I have someone interested in the motor. He wants to put it in his '63 beetle. That will be an epic tire-burner!

Still want to know how they deal with getting air to the radiator...

If I'm not mistaken they have ram air ducts in the underbody ducted up to the front of the radiator.

That's what they said. It's such a critical part of the swap that I wish they'd have showed it.

Yeah. I can't imagine that the car would handle traffic well at all.

It may not do well in traffic but it goes like stink. It beat super-gramps. That's an 11 second subaru wagon.
