1968 Front Grill

Post by EJ333 »

I am freshening up the appearance of my '68 grill. I've polished up the large center portion and am going to repaint the two side grill portions that surround the headlamps. Can anyone tell me if the original black painted portions were matte black ( as it looks now after 48 years) or a semigloss black ? Thanks

I thought it was more of a landau black like the interior.

I had just unwrapped those bezels never been touched or painted, brand new and kept wrapped. I looked up landau, I would say this is not landau but matt or flat . Landau has a ever so slight gloss to it.

Do you have any original ones Robyn? There might be a variation from set to set also.

I just went by the black on the underside of the interior and pics of Arts car. your black looks a little oxidey (as flats, mats and satins tend to do) and the top edge as it starts to roll looks richer heading almost to satin.

I had a guy tell me that all the grills and surrounds came charcoal from the factory and the only reason everyone had black was because they liked black better and painted them that way. I called 'bullshit,' too.

I just installed my NOS set in April. They were new in the wrappers. I'd say they are flat black.

Sorry I don't have a better picture right now.
