backup Switch issues

I have just replaced the backup switch on an 1988 300ZX 5 speed manual transmission. The switch works outside of the transmission housing ( tested manually by hand) Once installed into the transmission housing it no longer works. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I seem to remember that there are switches with slightly different plunger depths. That is a possible issue, but I might be wrong about it.

Try a couple of washers under it.
