gas cap and or filler neck replacement

my car constantly leaks on LH turns -- i took cap rubber out and added a small rubber layer behind it to the point i can barely get the cap back on but it still leaks.

there are cracks in the rubber and i think its leaking thru that? its not leaking between body to rubber - although the original 510 inside rubber with all
the vent hose shows cracks as well- and ive also seen gas inside the trunk-

i see maddat makes a nice alum one (for their cell) anyone done something similar before i go to reinvent the whole thing? im planning to make one but want to see if there is anything "easy" before i get into it.. didnt see anything easy in a quick search-

want a nice filler neck with cap- and remove most of the 510 breather stuff - put a 1 way valve in to the top tank as a vent-- i dont think the rest is needed?

Hi Mike;
Yep it's a common problem. Here's a thread from a few years ago, eventually showing how I ended up solving the problem on my car, with plenty of other comments & suggestions along the way as well. http://the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 66#p255966

Hope this helps.

The rubber part at the body is available new if that would help your situation. I bought one of these but have not installed it yet. I don't have the filler tube either, so project is a bit down the road yet.

well i tried to weld a different neck onto the datsun retainer ring but couldnt do it without warping it-- after i put it in i found that the above mentioned rubber part had a crack where the top 5/8 hose mounted as well so there are distinct leaks- one thru the cap to seal and on the rubber-

also the subie thing is a no go now a days-- they literally rust apart and are in demand for subie owners- so makes it hard to source cheap-- \

a 65-70 mustang filler neck has the same 5 bolt pattern as the 510- ive cut one up and trying it out to fit perfect all i did was cut a small edge off the circle to match the 510 shape
- waiting on lordco for 2' of marine fill hose to finish the install -

right now the 5/8 line i put a one way check valve on-- if i decide it needs to be connected back to the filler it is easy to put a bulkhead fitting in the line with teflon washers and then a -8 push lock AN fitting --

this was easy and cost about 50 with brand new parts-- the marine filler hose is half of that-- mustang filler i have in stock theyre like 20 and a gascap was 8 -- C$ so about 35 usd . no hunting at a scrap yard..

if the bead roller here could have done mild steel easily then i could have just put a bead on the filler after cutting the excess off - (the mustang one has a 45 degree curve in it and about 8 inches long.). since bead roller didnt work i cut the bead off and then just tig welded it back on ..

the stock rubber 510 part got cut up to use as a rubber washer between the panel and the filler neck

now to go for a drive and see if it works-- well it sort of works-- no fuel inside now but the cap i got is vented so it is "supposed" to only let air in but it isnt sealing and there is a small amount escaping-- way better than it was but need to find a "non vented" cap now
