WTB - Dogleg

I know this is a stretch, but I'm hoping to find a shortie L-series dogleg. Converting a '72 4dr 510 w/L20B from automatic. Need clutch pedal, shifter and fork also.

I've seen too many code variations to be sure which is right...but the one I'm looking for is FS5*63A (not sure if the * is a W or a C).

Yeah $1500 is a bit steep unless of course it's been rebuilt. Why a dog leg, to avoid shorting driveshaft? I'd look for a trans from a truck, 280z/zx and the like that can be had for $300-$600 but naturally their being used bring a certain amount of risk.

Doh! just saw the NIB, SO!! yeah $1500 for a new in box is a good deal. But I gota ask does it have lube in it and if not has it been sitting with no lube? and could internal rust possibly be a factor? I've seen rusty internal fro sitting trannies before so,,,,,,,

I had not considered that it may not have any protection from corrosion....my military stuff is always covered in cosmoline.

some may remember my nos 1000 and 1200 parts that came from southside nissan when they were unloading stock back in the late 80s early 90s. this transmission is from the same buy. it is not in a box but in a bag. this afternoon I will remove it from its resting spot in a warm dry barn filled with oak chairs and tables. I will try to gain access to a borescope then make a small incision in the bag and get some pics of the inside.

Great point Three B's...I'm PMing with RMS. I'm sure he'll verify that condition for me. I plan to autocross/hillclimb the car and the track and hills I run on are all 2nd and 3rd gear. I used a dogleg in an 510 I had many years ago and I absolutely loved the pattern.

FS5W63A The W is for Warner style syncros.

Pro.... has exact same 1,2,3 gears as stock 4 speed but a nice reasonable 15% overdrive. Same length as stock 4 speed. Adequate strength. Ideal reverse above first for rocking car stuck in a snow drift.

Con.... trans mount needs modifications. Trans not that plentiful/common.



FS5W71B

Pro... wide, mid and close ratio gear choices. Overdrive from mild to wild. Extra strong, built to handle inline six cylinder L28s. Very common/cheap in '77 and up z and early zx, 810/Maxima through '84 and 620 and early 720 trucks.

Con.... trans mount needs modification, driveshaft shortened.


Never understood the dogleg fascination for an around town car. I prefer a good straight shift into second and presume the dogleg is no different than the awkward 2 to 3 shift in a regular H pattern transmission. On the track, never using first would be fine, but not so much in town. Also I like the over drive shift location right and forward out of the way rather than over by the passenger seat. Highly recommend the mid ratio 71B. I have one (first year 280zx mid ratio) but I swapped an '85 720 diesel tail on it. Mostly for the raised fulcrum point short shifter but after '80, all 71B have a reverse check sleeve in the tail that prevents a down shift from 5th into reverse just below it. I do have a long (31.5") dogleg minus the front and rear cases. This would have been available only in Japan and the 610SSS? in Australia
