WTB 5 speed transmission

Post by Tesc510 »

I'm looking for a five speed transmission to swap in my 510. Not looking for any particular one just as long as it is in working condition and is compatible with the l16. I'm fine with shortening the drive shaft. I'm located in central California (Modesto) and don't mind driving to the Bay Area, North or south a bit. Thanks :D

A few things...

A five speed will not make you car go faster.
Some five speeds will actually make your car take offs sluggish.
If you drive mainly in town a five speed rarely gets used and is mostly along for the drive.

Hands down the most compatible swap is an S10 five speed. It has identical internal gears as the 510 sedan but with a respectable over drive. No drive line shortening and the speedometer cable is in the same location. It does have a funky reverse above first shift pattern.

Thanks datzenmike for the info!
I'm mainly looking for a 5 speed so that I can drive my car farther distances and take it on the freeway with out too much noise.
Toylet which yard is it in?

The '79 zx is an excellent choice. It's a mid ratio so not too different from your 4 speed and the over drive not much different from the S10 200sx. I have a '79 in my 710 and love it.

Well, if you have a wagon just use the sedan driveshaft. If a sedan shorten the driveshaft 5.5" or to 37 3/8".

The clutch does not care what the transmission is and the transmission does not care what clutch is used. They are totally separate. BUT... the clutch release bearing collar IS part of the clutch assembly and must remain with the clutch you have, even though it is mounted on the clutch arm in the transmission. Keep your old collar it is matched to the pressure plate.... but replace the used bearing. This thing...

The 710 I have came with the same 26" F4W63 transmission as is in the earlier 510. I put a zx transmission in and the shifter fit the hole without cutting. By carefully unclipping the speedometer cable and pulling it out into the engine compartment I was able to feed it down the back of the engine and over the top of the transmission to the far side and even though the transmission is longer, it still fit and works in the new location.

I made my own modified mount but you can still buy them for $$$. There is a Dime Quarterly article and plans for making them that uses your old mount. You can almost make them with a hand drill. Anyway a shop could make these for you locally.

Well it's very unlikely the zx transmission will have the same pinion gear so your speedometer will read incorrectly. Pull your old one... (probably) a 17 tooth Black color code, but check. What you probably will need is to look out for a Black (or what ever color it is) pinion that will fit the 5 speed.
