FS: 5 speed datsun transmission - SOLD

Post by linnmath »

Selling a 5 speed datsun 280z or 280zx transmission (unsure which one - if you can tell by the pictures please comment)

Pulled from my 510 as I wasn't happy with the angle on the KA and I got the proper 240sx 5 speed.

Not sure on condition as I haven't finished my build but was told it was in good working condition. Also not sure on a price but was thinking start around $450 (open to offers)

Can only be a '77-'78 if it's a 280z and only a '79 if it's a 280zx. This one was made before '80. It also only has the reverse light switch so most likely an EFI car like a z, zx or 810. And it has a car slave cylinder on it. The 620 had same 71B transmission, but several more emission related switches on it.

If you mark the input and outlet spline, place in first gear and turn the input 20 times while counting the output turns you will likely find it's a mid range with exactly 6 turns.

Well it may be as there was no difference between the z and the '79 only zx. All '80 and up zx, 810, Maxima 71Bs had small changes on the outside that this one does not have.

Have been told that the Z you should be able to shift right from 5th to reverse but on the ZX you cant as they added reverse lockout. Have you heard of this? Sounds like an easy way to tell them apart.

If this is true then this would be a 280z transmission.

Yes starting in '80 all 71B 5 speeds were equipped with a reverse check sleeve that blocks a straight downshift from 5th into reverse. A handy little addition. I have a '79 280zx 5 speed in my 710 and put the rear case from an '85 Diesel on it. Mostly for the shorter shift throw it provided but the reverse check sleeve didn't hurt my feelings either.
