Spring Thaw Classic - BC - May 1-3 2009

We would like to invite members of the 510 Club of BC to the first annual Spring Thaw Classic Car Adventure, happening May 1-3, 2009. The Spring Thaw is a non-competitive budget-minded 3-day driving adventure through British Columbia for pre-1979 touring and sports cars. This is for those who enjoy spirited driving on some of the most challenging and beautiful roads in the world. Concours cars are more than welcome, but we also encourage those less-than-mint, hard-driven, budget classics to take part. Enthusiasm for driving old, unreliable cars counts more than anything!

- Start Location: Squamish, BC
- Finish Location: Hope, BC
- Route Book, Hotels, Decals, Swag and Awards included in your entry fee.
- No special equipment or knowledge is required.

Early entry fee is $325 CDN, and is valid until March 15. Final entry will close on April 10th, 2009.

Please let your friends, even those who don't own a 510, know about the event. Our event is open to sport, touring and classic cars from 1979 and earlier. Sorry, no trucks or motorcycles. Think you've got a car that fits, but doesn't meet the age category? Feel free to email us. Seriously, we're not likely to turn away your Delorean DMC-12 or original GTI if you can convince us.

More information is available on our website http://www.touringadventure.com. Any questions can be asked in this thread or emailed. We're looking to get a good mix of cars from all makes and models, and would love to see some 510's on the road with the rest of us!

Sounds like a fun event, nice poster too...though it would be better if there were a Japanese marquee on there rather than two German. :)

We definitely want to encourage more Japanese involvement! I keep scouring craigslist for a 510...but Beetles keep finding their way into my garage. Someone needs to come out and show me the light ;-)

On another year, I'd definately be interested.
Are you gathering at a single spot at either the start or end of the event for people to come take a look?

I'd be game if I wasn't stuck in town for awhile. This sounds like a ton of fun!

This week, we firmed up details of our start location on Friday in Squamish. Registration and Official Start will be at the West Coast Railway Museum - a fantastic collection of Canadian railway heritage. Spring Thaw entrants will have discounted access to the museum, so we encourage everyone to arrive early! We will have full details and revised Friday schedule on the Touring Adventure website shortly.

http://www.wcra.org/heritage/

We only have 11 spots left as we've set the max at 50 cars. If you're planning on entering, best to do so asap!

-Dave

p.s. one entrant still has no floors or paint on his Porsche 356...so if you think you don't have time to be ready, I guarantee you're doing better then he is!

Sounds like I'd like to be there just to see the start of the event!
My car is too low for a true TSD rally, even if it stays on the pavement. But I wouldn't mind coming up to see you all off. I'll see what the work load is like closer to the beginning of the event, I’m sure one or two more might come out for that. BTW great starting point for the event :D

If you can make the Sea to Sky up to Squamish, you should be fine on the rest of the route. This is a VERY, VERY relaxed event. Think you and 49 of your closest car-nut friends going for a weekend trip as opposed to TSD. Warwick and I don't even refer to the event as a 'rally', as it just doesn't describe the event properly.

The Spring Thaw is fast approaching, participants are busy in their garages getting cars ready, and the route is looking great! All registered participants were sent an email on Sunday with more info about preparation, start location, and other details (if you didn't get it, let us know!). For those of you unable to make the full weekend, there is still an opportunity to join us at various points along the route. Here are some details to help you rendezvous with us!

FRIDAY, MAY 1 - OFFICIAL START - SQUAMISH, BC
We know you probably like historic machinery of all kinds, so we thought we’d start the event at the West Coast Railway Association’s Heritage Park in Squamish. Google Map

The best time to come check out all the cars would be between 12:00-2:00pm when everyone has signed in and final preparations are being made before the start. Take some extra time and check out the Railway Heritage Park!

SATURDAY, MAY 2 - SUNPEAKS RESORT, BC
Perhaps you're located closer to the interior of BC? Well, head on over to Sunpeaks in the Kamloops area on Saturday afternoon! Spring Thaw cars will be arriving around 4:00pm, and we're planning to meet up with some local car club members outside the Village Day Lodge. The drive up to Sunpeaks is a great road, so come join us!

SUNDAY, MAY 3 - HOPE, BC
And finally, after a weekend of adventuring through BC, the cars will be arriving in Hope, BC for a Lion's Club fundraiser BBQ lunch, where the cars will be on display. We will be arriving around 12:30pm at the Hope Curling Rink - about an hour's drive from Vancouver.

We hope to see you out there, and hopefully next year, you can play hooky from work too and join us for the whole trip!

The event is on, here’s a slide show half way down the page. Good photo ops in the Beautiful BC interior country side. Looks like they've followed one of our classic runs over the Duffy Lake Rd, down to Merritt.

Weather, roads, cars, people....Everything was great! Really glad I took the plunge. I'll be back for next years run.
Here is a link to several links to photos of the event:
http://www.touringadventure.com/photos-video.html

I didn't think it was going to, but my car made the whole trip. Leaking more oil than I'd like, but another car was actually worse! The megasquirt efi / edis ignition worked great, and I only had one incident of overheating on day 2, near the finish, going up the last hill to Sun Peaks the temp gauge hit 220*. we shut it down but couldn't find anything wrong. Started it up and drove the rest of the way up the mountain and all thru day 3 at 180*.........

Great way to start the driving season! :D

Daryl,

I'll asume you had the yellow roadster on the event?

Roads looked great, and the weather couldn't have been better!
Glad you had a great time, and personal thought about the event?
