CHILDREN'S CHARITY RACE PICTURES

Postby bertvorgon » 10 Aug 2010 08:28

The weather was not great yesterday, Murphy being the bugger he is. From Richmond to Mission, I went through three rain storms, and the mist would not let up. Arriving at the track, about 9:15, I found Tracey sitting on the pre-grid, with the slicks on. It starting to rain again, so she elected to pull out, and return to the pits. As I progressed down to the Specialty area, I found that most of the fast cars had not gone out for qualifying, as the track was just too wet. That being said, when the qualifying session came up for Dave, Collin, and Harry, they put on the floods, and gave it bullets. Collin qualified on the pole, with Dave back in 3rd.
As the morning progressed, the weather kept messing with everybody, almost drying out, then another wave of rain/mist would blow through. I have never seen so many tire get changed back and forth, as pit crews tried to second guess whether wets or drys were in order. At one point the Specialty Miata had wets on one side, and drys on the other, to speed things up for the last minute call.
The Organizers were tearing their hair out, obviously wanting the good weather for the Charity rides, and for the race to run under dry conditions. At this point they moved the race 1/2 hour further along.
I walked around the pits for awhile, meeting people I have not seen in years. At one point I got handed the keys to a friend’s Hyudai Genesis, to test drive, as we got talking about the new rear wheel drive cars. I have been interested in the Genesis and he had just gotten the Turbo 2 litre one, and then chipped it.
There were some nice cars there of course, some with vintage race history, like the Baretta and Dave's ex-Greenwood/Greg Pickett Corvette.
Wandering the far end of the pits I see a purple 510 and immediately recognize it as Bob's V-8 powered Purple Grape, now owned by a fellow named "Stretch". I only talked with him briefly, but I think he wants to race it. There was question if the cage was legal or not. The car has suffered some neglect and needs some TLC.
I saw Lorne Stead and his 1200 there, which he ultimately came in from his race on the hook, so I do not know what happened there. Lorne's 1200 was owned by a fellow named Bob Basaraba, who used to drive it everywhere on race slicks. He used to slalom with us out at Boundry Bay.
Paul was there with his ex-Specialty Engineering DRC 510. What was neat today, was that Trevor was there, so he got to see his old car back in all its glory. Paul had a good race and brought it back in shiny!
I think the main race started about 3:30 or so, with the real fast cars at the back of the pack, with Collin and Dave at the front. At this time the track was still damp in spots. I won't go into the details of what happened next, others that saw it can attest to the action. Bottom line was Collin got taken out by a very stupid, brain out of gear move, with Dave suffering some body contact by the same fellow. Why I don't road race my 510! At any rate, Tim Brown and Dave Kinicki are powering their way from the back of the field, with Tim getting to the front, and staying out there. He did a 1:07:398 lap, which is almost a record. Dave K. was working his way up, when he got black flagged for passing under a yellow, so had a stop and go penalty. It would have been interesting to see if he would have caught up to Tim.
Meanwhile, Dave H. got a black flag, under a questionable pass under a yellow also.
At about 5 minutes before the end of the race, Dave H's engine let go, putting some oil on the track. As Wouter came in fast, he saw some cars had gone off, and with nowhere to really go, went straight into the concrete barrier right in front of us. That was scary, the run out is so very short, and points out the downside of the Mission track, as it is very unforgiving with the concrete lining it. I would say the damage to Wouters Mazda was significant, as it moved that concrete barrier OVER!
It was not a good day for the Specialty Team for sure. Tim Brown handily won the race, in the Baretta.

Nice pics, some serious sleds there.
Is that front air dam on the #2 510 considered a "Dobi" type with a skirt?
I am searching for a different look for the front of my car.

Here are some more that I re-sized for the Realm.
While it is easy to be a critic from the bleachers, every time I have gone to Mission, I have seen some truly stupid moves, race tactics aside. I can remember what happened at our Molson Indy race, with the Sports Car Club. It was as though there was a million dollar prize purse, and so many checked their brains back in pre-grid. There was NO way that person was even going to be close to winning, and what a dumb move in the 2nd or 3rd lap, specially when you consider Collin is so very clean in his moves. That guy went in their like a freight train, WAAYYY too fast, to even begin to get hauled down, to make that hairpin. I have seen video now....nuff said.

Mackie Motorworks 510 is a very nicely cared for car. Anyone on the island needing help with there car, or their carbs, should look up Ian at Sidney Motors.
