Here is an excerpt from the City of Phoenix's website:
A common myth ...
...Installing a lower speed limit will cause drivers to slow down and reduce accidents.

Facts indicate otherwise. Research conducted throughout the country over several decades has shown that drivers are influenced by the type of street and the current traffic conditions, and not the posted speed limit.

At least somebody gets it down in the land of the free and the home of the Whopper.

25 years ago, a major government supported study found the same, speed limits on the major motorways were raised, and the accident and death rage fell over the next 5 years.
Why? It's simple, the differential between those who obey the limit and those who drive to at a comfortable rate were reduced. In effect giving you more time to react to any moving situation.

It's old hat really, but in BC, it's simply a tax grab. The funny thing is that if we all stopped speeding for a year, those cops would be out of a job, and our problem would be solved. If it was about safety, we know cops should be patrolling intersections where over 80% of all motor vehicle accident occurred. And if it was about protecting people, you'd see patrols in school zone and the lime. But ask any copies why those areas don't get patrolled, and they will blatantly tell you that more tickets can be written in a hour in any speed trap that anywhere else. So is it a out safety... Obviously not.

And it's simply something we have to accept. You want to really possible off a copy, go foul a speed trap! I've often wondered what the legalities are behind picketing a speed trap zone. Wouldn't it feels great to simply post a sign - off of the roadway of course - right before a nicely set up speed trap?
