Re: SPEC510 - The 18th Annual East Coast Datsun 510 Meet
Wow, the 18th annual East Coast Datsun 510 meet - SPEC510 is over.
This years event was really fantastic. The weather was some of the best we have ever had. Well except for Thursday night.
Keith and I arrived at the track around lunchtime Thursday to secure our camping area. We get there and someone had roped off half of the area we normally use. We find a track worker and he tells us that the Boy Scouts are coming this weekend and they are holding that area for them. We are like WTF? We've been here for 18 years and the size of the area is large enough for over 100 Boy Scouts. So they agree to split the area in half and we ended up with about 80% of it.
So we set up camp and make our way down to the paddock to see some race cars. Only one 510. Chip Collingwood's blue #68 car. Lots of cool vintage cars there.
Thursday evening, it starts to rain and we walk to the next campsite and our new neighbors, Two brothers from MD in a large travel trailer with and awning and canopy, invite us to hang out where it is nice and dry. We party with them under the awning and another 510 rolls in. Ramon from Tenn. With his 2 door in tow behind a new Nissan Van. Ramon works for Nissan in Smyna, Tenn. this is his 2nd year attending. He hung out with us and we had a few beers and finally went to bed. It rained hard all night long. Like 5-6" of rain overnight giving everything a good soaking, including the inside of my tent.
Friday morning the rain tapered off and the sun came out and it was a magnificent day. Sunny and 68 degrees. No humidity and no bugs. Lou rolled in from NH and we all went to town for breakfast at Grandma's Diner. A tradition for us. Then off to the car wash to clean up the dimes (and Keith's VG33 powered Celica )
Lots more 510s showed up through the day on Friday. Keith, Lou and I went back down to the paddock Friday afternoon and ran into John Morton and Sylvia. We had a great conversation with them and they promised to come and hang out with us the next day by out campsite.
Then it was off to town for Chinese food and back to the track for a bonfire. (Thanks Quinn)
Saturday we awoke to the sounds the Boy Scouts starting their day way too early 6am. We also had sunny skies and temps were to climb to 68 again. Nice!
Lots of great racing on Saturday and then many of us signed up for track laps at lunchtime. Short runs this year (3 laps for $5) but it was very spirited and I got to chase down the V8 camaro pace car for 3 invigorating laps.
A couple of our regulars, Jesus and Hector from PA had car trouble on the way and it took them all day to get it fixed, but they showed up with 2 super clean wagons and boy can they party. They came with many of their family members and got set up and were cooking food and sharing food and drinks with everyone. Everyone in their group always had a smile on their face.
One of the highlight cars that came was Dave Levinson's Bob Sharp Racing 510 tribute car. This was the car's maiden voyage and it was a beauty. Dave did an outstanding job building this car. I got a chance to drive it and it is smooth, powerful and well balanced.
Saturday afternoon, John and Sylvia came by and hung out and they autographed stuff for everyone and we all enjoyed their visit. It was great to finally have had Pete Brock and now John Morton join us for our event. We have a banner for the meet and both Pete and John have signed it for us while they were at SPEC510. Sweet.
We had a huge Pallet fire Saturday night (thanks to Ross, Sean and Nathan for the pallet run) and everyone stayed up late into the night. Sunday brought more great weather and more great racing too.
We had 17 510s show up and about 40 people and it was a great time.
Pics to come soon.

Re: SPEC510 - The 18th Annual East Coast Datsun 510 Meet
I caught that rain about 60 miles outside Harrisburg, PA on I-81. It was so hard my wipers and Rain-X did no good. So I pulled off and parked in a gas station under it's pumping station roof As the rain tapered off to a driveable rain I again hit the road. Some 15 minutes later it stopped, the clouds disappeared and as the Sun started rising out of the East it all dried up NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Something about that awesome feeling of Here Comes The Sun, Summit Point, my friends causes the right foot just cause high MPH and I'm talking 100+ but briefely. Back roads to the Summit Point were flooded from the mass rains Qwik510, B3, Dave talked about. Had to crawl across some of the river crossings to get to the track but the track and camping area was in pretty good shape considering.
The 510 ran GREAT!! as usual and I got 29mpg, could a gotten better but the wet roads along the way in other States tend to create more rolling resistance. Anyway ya the three spirited laps on track were great. Dave was ahead of me and Keith behind me. Following Dave and the pace car was indeer FUN!!!! with a few full drifts in the carosel with other 510rs snapping pics in which I'm hoping to get a few. Maybe next year we can get 5 spirited laps for $5 and get a few more 510s in one group to actually stay together. Don't know what happened to the rest of the guys but when that Camero Pace car, Dave, Keith and I hit the gas we were gone gone gone with no one in toe.

The 510's are cool, and I love that bad ass Celica!
The photo of the 'trike' Mini is quite typical. The back axles is barely along for the ride.
The Sharpe tribute car is cool. I guess if you do a Sharpe tribute car, you won't have Pete Brock hunting you down for license infringement! A local guy did a Sharpe tribute car a few years ago, looks great as well.
Cool gathering guys, thanks for sharing the photos.
