Re: Octoberfast 2014
Here we go.....
The day started with huge major torrential rain, Matt and I wondering how wet the bush was going to be. We all met up in North Van, with the rivers still falling from the sky. Fueling up was next on agenda, you just never know what you might encounter out there.
The road up towards the mine was not too bad, just lots of potholes. Crossing the river had us heading up the first steep climb, our Hankooks having no issues with the wet rocks. This is our first trip with our Tracker replacement, having us wondering how it would do, with just the 2 litre motor.
Arriving at our first creek crossing, had us getting out, to scope things over. It looked quite bad, but, we got Matt lined up to try it first. Wham..he is stuck. Short story is that we have now found Matt’s and my limit, not necessarily the truck. You have to be prepared to really blast through this type of obstacle. That means you are going to cream the bottom of your vehicle, something Matt and I are not prepared to do at this time. As it was, we dropped into a hole. Stuffing in the plastic bumper a tad and pulling the bumper out. We hooked up a tow strap and with a small tug and push backwards, we got him clear. At this time, Jason announced he had no brakes, the fluid level having dropped to the bottom of the master. Yikes!
Robyn of course hits the thing full blast in his 510, comes to a dead stop, stuck. After a minute of trying to bully his way out of the creek, Steve steps into the creek, grabs the rear fender lip, and lifts the rear a foot into the air. We throw some rocks and wood under him, and with all of us pushing, he is through...Matt still is in awe......
Then Steve in his jeep hits it, gets hung up, more wood under tire, he is through, then Jason in his huge truck. Matt and I throw some gear in Jason’s truck, lock up the Tracker, and off we go. In another 5 minutes we are at the target parking area.
I walk into the trees, checking things out. I find myself looking over a cliff, thinking we need to head off to the right, bush wacking through some devils club and low brush. In a few minutes we are on the side of a crazy steep side hill, but, in second growth forest, absolutely beautiful, lush green. There were tons of different varieties of mushrooms and fungus, thriving in the damp forest, the floor covered in 3” of green moss. We head down and to the right and in another ten minutes, I spy an old spring mattress...WE ARE THERE!
Long story short, it looks like there were 3 -4 buildings and there is a ton of stuff buried in the forest floor. First old moss covered plank I turn over has two nice pick axe heads pop out, score. We see rusting cans everywhere, start finding old wash basins, a gold pan, an old toilet, oil cans, food cans, and on and on. We all scatter in our mission, Jason of course finding the carbide lamp, major find and that spurred us on. It was hard to get a sense of the layout, other than it looks like that just threw stuff and garbage out, within very close proximity to the buildings. I think I found one of the major midden’s, as I found some glass bottles and the ground was filled with rusting cans and appeared to be quite deep.
We followed the pipe down to the river, seeing where it crossed, the steel cable still in not bad shape. This is how the miners crossed the river to the mine, a small walkway on top of the pipe. We headed back up to the camp site, scanning the ground for any signs human activity. We spent another hour starting to peel back some of the walls, which have all collapsed inwards, as the snow load and 80 years of rain have taken their toll on the wood. We found what turned out to be a medicine cabinet, which was mounted to an outside wall. When the wall folded in, the cabinet just went face down. We pulled it out and inside was first aid stuff, a roll of tape that was still dry, and a neat ceramic coated medical utensil dish. As we literally peeled the moss back like a carpet, the building structure was unveiling itself.
It looks like the others will be like that also. I went back to where I found the pick axe heads, now thinking this would the parts/maintenance place maybe. I think I'm on the right track, as I peeled up more, steel drill bits appeared, a lunch box, some other bit, and a flattened drum of some white looking powder. I brought a sample back to see if I can figure out what it is.
After a few hours it was time to climb back to the vehicles, which really worked my old legs out, it was STEEP. I think we also found the original horse trail, as that is how everything got there back in the 20's and 30's. I'm pretty good at finding old trails.
We had a quick meeting to agree to stop at a spot just before the dam, to have some smokies and snacks. We put Jason in between us, so as to make sure he got down ok with NO brakes. arriving at the spot still had a small fire going, perfect, we had smokies going in ten minutes. A nice hour was passed talking about our find and other adventures to come. I really want to take a group up to Bralorne, for a campout and look at the old ghost town there.
I do know Steve was pretty stoked when Jason found that lantern, so it would not surprise me if next time we go, he has a back hoe for our excavation.
The drive out was uneventful, with Robyn and Mandy staying in front of Jason, with Matt and I bring up the rear. When we pulled into the Canadian tire parking lot, the vehicle had dried and right away I spotted wetness on the left rear axel, where sure enough, just above, the brake line was leaking.
So we will be heading back, with some proper digging equipment, I can see many "archaeological" weekends spent up there, peeling away the layers of history, all of us hoping to find another lantern.
