Just looked on the map, there is a 255 HA fire on Placer Mountain just east of Eastgate, been burning for 3 days, no current control on this fire and control notes "Fire of note". It's about 5 miles away, adjacent to the road, so depending on the prevailing winds, we could see a bit of smoke through here.
Do leave your self some time, depending on where you are leaving Surrey from! If we are not there, we will be on our way, or at the Lookout for awhile.
We may get some smoke, as it looks like the wind is shifting back. Good for the Kelowna people for sure.
I'm all loaded now, food and frozen water to put in in the morning, topped up my methanol tank today...not the we might go fast at any time....
Sunday on could be bad for the fires as another lighting storm is coming and the heat is going back up.
One of the scariest things in my life happened in Manning Park at the Hampton Campsite during an electrical storm !!!!!

I’m pretty sure I’m nuts for getting up at this ungodly hour....
I wonder how far I can push my car down the street before I have to start it, trying not to wake up those I try to respect!

Great drive, and the heat even stayed down making a mid summer cruise that much more enjoyable.
We stuck around a few minutes longer to see if anyone was running late as we expected a few more.
Matt, we’re hoping you weren’t running late! We arrived quite early to Bromley Rock, traffic was light - which was the plan and why we left Hope by 6: I5. I was as great to see Dave pull in on his BMW bike and catch up - great surprise.
I won’t take the wind out of Bert’s write up, because I’m sure he’ll be up at 5am tomorrow doing it!
It was. I e to be home by mid afternoon, spend the rest of the day with the family.
I’ll resize what I have and post shortly. Need to get on the PC for that.

What a great day, safe, some nice pavement to hit, temperature could not have been better, and without saying, the company of comrades makes the day. Nice to meet Jason and have Matt's car out on the Great Rolling Dyno and very cool to have Trevor out in that funny looking VW.....Gorgeous car.
SUMMER DRIVE 2018
With the rolling convoy behind me, as we followed the Sumallo River, I anticipated the new pavement coming up. It started just before the uphill, left hand sweeper leading onto the straight, where at the top, it is a fast right hander that used to be really rough with broken pavement. This should be good I thought, Byron on my bumper.
I dropped it down a gear and rolled into boost, pulling hard up the hill, getting ready to set up for the right hander. It was at the start of the turn I had the unsettling thought that….how slippery was this? The new jet black pavement had a sheen to it in the morning light. Later, even Trevor commented on that, was it going to be slippery? My brand new Yokohama 048’s had yet to be scrubbed in also, which was another issue crossing my mind. Let’s just say I tossed it in with a good deal of reserve.
A word on those tires, the grip level is astounding, on some HUGE toss in’s, I never felt the car not track my line. I shudder to think what the final limit is and I would think it would be very controllable anyhow. I have gotten them loose in the past and at no point did I ever feel like they blindsided me. Norm is trying the Nexen tires so I hope they are as good as the Yoko’s as our next “go to” tire.
We had most of the new pavement to ourselves, with the twistiest section totally clear of traffic. I saw Byron have a “moment” behind me when he starved for fuel, screwing up the power application, not a good scenario, but he collected it just fine.
We were at the top at Allison pass in what seemed like a heartbeat and just cruised along till the turn to the lookout. The road up has gotten really beat up over the years with some wicked bumps, so discretion as to how fast we went kept it to a very dull roar.
Being this early had no one there, the brilliant sun just up over the eastern ridges, casting a wonderful colour to the cars and mountains, gorgeous! We could just see the plume of smoke from the Placer Mountain forest fire, off to the south east.
Rolling again had us zipping along through the Park, the day warming up, yet a perfect temperature for the motors. We could not have asked for a better day from that standpoint.
The section from East Gate to Princeton has been straightened in a lot of the old hairpin areas, but, there are still enough good corners to make the drive challenging at speed, where again we had very little traffic to deal with. The east bound way has more legal passing areas on the hills, so a quick shot of power had us by them.
Princeton has us all fueling up at the Chevron, I put five gallons in with some of my octane boost, which would let me get home with no problem.
As the morning had us not really wasting any time for the most part, we were at Bromley Park really early, like I think 8:00 Am or so. That just showed how fast distance can be travelled when staying on task and no traffic.
With the cars lined up we had some nice snacks, which really constituted breakfast and not the planned brunch/lunch!
At one point I saw a motorcycle come into the lot and thought I recognized the face. Sure enough, it was our old friend and 510 member, Dave Doan, who saw my post of the drive and decided to do a road trip from Grand Forks!!! Sure nice to see him. We did wait till about 10:45 to see of Matt would show up, so hopefully you did not come as I know we were so early.
The plan for the drive back was to stop at the Hope Slide for one last photo op and rest before the grind back on #1. Traffic was definitely heavier, as we were mid day at that point. I stuck myself behind Jason in Matt’s Turbo 510 ( I wonder if we will always think of this as Matt’s car) He was behind Trevor in his beautiful Porsche Turbo. I like to follow other cars at times to see how they do in corners.
We had a few civilians in trucks and BMW’s try to show us how to do it, but, they all parked it in the corners. There was a time I would have just 86’d all of them, but those days are done for all the reasons now. We left them in the dust on the Similkameen Mine hill, as the three of us just had way more power on that steep climb. They blasted pass us at way over the speed limit at Sunday Summit, which is potentially a bad move as that is in the RCMP zone at that time of day.
Once back into the Manning Park Trevor just kept a nice pace up, with the three of us getting some clear zones in the twistys, which was nice for one last G-force session. That Porsche is really WIDE when you are on its bumper!
One last stop at the Hope Slide, Trevor and I noticing the RCMP ghost car, working that Sunshine Valley stretch. Those guys are always there, catching people who have been slow up the Hope Slide climb and then roll on the throttle on the long straight stretch.
The grind back was just that, I hate that drive back from Hope to White Rock. At least traffic was moving, Alveen and I cruised along at 115 most of the way.
Speaking of Alveen, I have sent a letter to Toyota, for Alveen to do a commercial for Toytoa Corrolla. Alveen drove the wheels off that Corrolla wagon, and as today's commercials really never talk about what a car can do,, they sell an image, Alveen can show WHAT!

I headed to home first, to wash the bugs and dust off the car, before finally parking it till next event. My GPS showed 577 KMS (360 miles) covered for the day and I was back home by 2:30. My total moving time was 6:23 which speaks to how fast we actually did the drive, with a moving average of 90 KMH, one of our higher averages. I did bring my infrared thermo and then totally forgot to use it. Even on the steep climb my water stayed at 170F, testament to the big rad. I still show fuel on gauge so I burned up maybe 14 gallons, giving me 23 -24 MPG.
I hope that was a fun day for all, stay tuned for our next outing, 70 KM of brand new blacktop.
