I'll be there both days - working in the car corral - bring our your 510's, Z's - whatever Datsun. And you'll get to do a few laps of the track at lunch for cars in the show.

Hey Byron,

What time do you plan on leaving home? I could drive to your place and we can convoy there, that would be a fun day. I can show you the electrical connectors I have and see if they are any good too.

Hi Keith,

I’m leaving here around 8, headed out to my fathers place to pick him up and out to the track from there. It’s 1:30am, and I’ve gone about as far as I could tonight with jetting the carbs.

Drop in if you like, send me a text to my cell if your coming out - then I’ll know you’re on your way.

Morning World,

Yes, I would like to come, be fun. Just got back from camping at Manning. I will be there for 8:00 SUNDAY, takes me about 50 minutes from my place.

Will fuel up the Datsun today.

My GPS showed I hit 102 MPH (165 KHM) on the parade lap!

My car fired upon the first roll over, quickly I drove it down the street to not wake up the neighbours, then sat for 5 minutes and let it warm up. It takes about 5 minutes for the pistons to grow enough to stop the rattle, water temp hitting my thermostat of 165F.

Rolling down to 176th had very light morning traffic as I made my way over to Byron’s in Maple Ridge, only taking me about a half an hour, a marked departure from heavy traffic times.

Byron greeted me at his door, bowl of cereal in hand. Glen was to come soon and the three of us cruised out to Mission raceway through light traffic.

After parking the cars we did a quick cruise through the pits, saying hi to the usual gang we know. Malcolm had his transmission break again on Saturday so he was not there. I ran into an old Solo competitor that used to race with me back into the 70’s, I have not seen him in 20 years.

I did not get a picture of it, got side tracked, but, there was a fully restored very rare Porsche 906 there, brought up from California for the weekend. It was powered by a 6 cylinder ( 2L.) engine making 220 HP, the car weighing only 1,280 lbs.

Byron in his infinite wisdom had mentioned that the three of us will stay at the back of the “parade” lap of vintage cars, which was comprised of some MG’s, new and old Mustang’s, some Jag’s. The idea being we would leave a gap and then could “catch up”, which basically meant FULL THROTTLE!

The first lap really was a warm up, Byron ahead of me, Glen behind. I have not driven the new Mission layout so was not familiar with the lines at all. I was amazed at how bumpy it was too in some places, making for judicious use of throttle and boost. I did not want to spin out on some silly parade lap. The older Mustang DID spin out twice……

I let Byron get way ahead of me so I could really pull the trigger to go down the straight, where I hit just over 100 miles an hour, taking a blink to catch up to him in the braking zone, which was early due to the traffic. I could see that getting a good drive out of Turn 8 and through Turn 9 onto the straight was really key to a fast terminal velocity. I was still a bit unsure of my tire grip with the new tires, let alone getting my brake pads up to temp…this was after all a “parade” lap. Even with just three laps with some hard braking, I think I would need some “track” pads. I carry a lot of speed down the straight and with a good drive I would likely be at 115 MPH going into the actual braking zone. That was fun, nice to really unleash my motor.

I left early as I did not want to face any heavy Sunday afternoon traffic issues and other than the usual lights in Abbotsford, had a nice drive back.

That speed was at the peak of my travel down to the Turn #1 from Turn #9. I had to be careful not to pass Byron leading onto the straight...that would have been frowned up I think! He was held up by a newer Mustang in the Turn 8 + 9.

I can see now that one must really be on-line exiting Turn 9, with the right side wheels just at the edge of the pit lane exit line ( it is a no-no to go over that, at least for road racing ). I also was braking way early, as both Byron and I caught up to the parade of cars at the end of the straight.

A gazillion years ago, on new slicks, stop watch timed, I did a low 12 in the 1/4. I would be a bit slower than that now with the taller tires. My problem is getting off the line with boost, yet not spin the tires too much. On a 200 foot skid pad I pulled 1.2 G's.

At Boundry Bay on the concrete surface, we set up a whole test day for stuff like that. Lineal slalom speed, etc. I think I covered some of that in the HISTORY I wrote last year. Having that whole airport to play with was just too much fun.

One of the guys that slalomed with us worked for Okanagan helicopters at the time ( you may have seen him on TV at times, as he was looking after aircraft accident investigation, BILL YEARWOOD) His perk was he could take people for rides, major bonus for us. One weekend he took us up to Grouse Mountain, where we "raced" the gondola to the bottom, giving it a head start. Then, he asked where to next? I said I would like to fly over Boundry Bay and see it from the air. Well, we flew over that main runway at 150 MPH about 50 feet off the ground, My God, what a rush that was !!!! We then went over Burns Bog and he let me take the controls...wow...there was an eye opener in co-ordination...which I was not. He then showed me an "auto rotation", for emergency landing, which I found really scary.
