Mission Raceway Sunday May 4 & 5

Post by bertvorgon » 20 Apr 2019 09:55

Anybody heading out to Mission on Sunday? Tracey is racing the Miata. Just wondering if there are enough 510's mobile to warrant a bit of a small cruise?

I'm not even sure if I will go yet, just tasting the waters. Weather looks to be good for the weekend at any rate.

I did not go out, will be seeing the gang today so will find out how Tracey did.

I have been trying to finish up a bunch of projects so I deferred to that.

Harry placed 1st in his race and Tracey was 3rd in hers, did not want to risk dicing with a person know to deliberately run into people.

Next race is May 4th and 5th, maybe we could get a 510 group together for one day of that weekend.

Sure wish it would warm up, I'm tired of the cold. Crap day today in the rain, went to Specialty to review some pictures for a GOODYEAR TIRE calendar, horrible on Highway #99. Just wait till long weekend traffic starts to come back.

I was there and I have never seen an ICSCC club event with that few entries. There was one car in the parking lot when I got there and the paddock was empty Tracy's group had 25 entries almost all Pro 3s

I was at the shop yesterday putting new front brake pads into my Honda Odyssey.

Andy was putting new rotors and truing up the pads for the Miata while I was there.

Car sure looks good all shined up again.

If the weather is good for the 4th/5th, I may just take the 510 out for a bit of a drive and watch the races.

The weekend is going to be good with Sunday the warmest.

Tracey and Harry will be racing and Andy might bring the GT1 Camaro out.

I'm very sure that on Sunday, I'm going to do a bit of a back roads cruise out to Mission for the day.

If any one wanted to meet up, we could pick a spot in Langley, then out the Fraser highway to 248th, south, and do the jiggy jogs to get to Harris Road, coming out just before the Mission Bridge.

For me this will be a good shakedown drive before we plan to head to Fort Casey.

My engine fired up right away, I quickly moved down the street so as not to wake up the neighborhood. The sun had just come up over the Cascades, looking to produce a nice warm day, which it did.

I stuck with my plan to head down 16th to 248th, zero traffic, except for a 60’s Chevy Nova, who followed me to the Otter Co-op, where a ton of 60’s rods, customs, etc were marshaling up to head to a car show somewhere.

As spring is finally full on, everything was a brilliant green, as I headed to the end of 248th. The temperature was engine perfect, but, I could tell I had no heat in the tires so was careful on the few twisty’s that I came upon. There are some very tight, blind hairpins along there. On my way back a guy on a motorcycle gave me pause for a second as I think he misjudged the radius of the corner and went to fast, too wide, almost coming into MY lane..yikes..

I did not run into any traffic till I got to the far end of Harris Road, so I could cruise at 10-15 Km over, a nice pace on those roads. The sun was well up and the interior of the car was now nice and comfy, just in time to arrive at the track by 8:15.
Tracey, John and Harry were getting the Mazda ready for Harry’s qualifying run. The engine is run till the oil is up to temp, wheels torqued, etc.. It takes a couple of people to help the driver hook up radio, Hans device, seat belts, cool suit ( later in the day).

Harry and Tracey’s lap times are sure down there, having done some 11’s there.

Harry’s race was red flagged when a Honda Fit had some contact going full bore into the braking zone and either got tapped or the rear brakes locked up, hanging an instantaneous left into the concrete wall. One done Honda fit…it will not buff out.

Lunch break was late due to the crash so that let us all enjoy the wonderful spread of food that Tracey & Andy supply, before Tracey’s race.

Tracey was 3rd on the grid and was definitely working the two V8 guys over, under braking. Luck of the draw got her hung up in some lapped traffic and she just did not have more time to catch back up, so she took 3rd in the race. Steve and I made suggestions that 5 lbs more boost and they would be toast.

Ian in his 510 got the gear box stuck in second about ¾ of the way through the race, so he was out. Car looked and sounded good when he was zipping along.

I stuck to my plan of re-tracing my drive back, staying away from Hwy1, a gong show at the best of times. Andy had ridden the Aprilia out and on Saturday there were 2 multicar crashes and 1 car fire heading West. At least he could go down the side and not get hung up. I got caught in that type of situation once in the 510 (before my big rad) and had to park for over an hour so as not to overheat and make sure the cam got enough oiling.

Traffic on Harris was of course heavier but at least it was moving, and, it was nice and scenic rolling through the lush farmlands and back roads again. I could feel the tires had some heat in them so could carve a few of the corners, with discretion mind you, on the way back.

All ready to head out to Byron’s on Friday for 510 Day, weather looking to be record breaking by then.

I did not take many pictures, but, did shoot some video, still learning my Tablet and of course some very, VERY basic video editing with some “App” that Matt downloaded for me. See if I can post up a link later to my Vimeo account.

If anyone would like to come over and help me wax my car, just give me a call!
