L18 wiring in a '68 510

Post by jdubboost »

well.. the weather is getting warmer outside and time to get the 510 up and running. anyway..

i tried a search on the site and couldnt find what i was looking for.

im pretty much a noob when it comes to doing really technical stuff (like wiring and what not)

my wiring is a total nightmare and i cant seem to make sense out of the wiring diagram in the haynes manual.

so if someone could maybe tell me what wire goes to where and some pics if not a big deal. just basic stuff for now, i just want to get the car started.

thanks.

well.. that diagram is for a 70-72. what would be different on a 68-69?

lighting is differnt on the early models
68-69 are single point distributors and dont use the relay for the 3rd gear swithc

all you need to get the car starter is the blk/wht wire, blkblu ,blk/grn and if still using your points use the ballast resisitor.

This is not hard

blk/wht wire will have 12volt when Key" ON". (goes to ballast resisitor) then out of ballst to the blk/grn wire to the +side of coil.

blk/blu will have 12volts in key in "START"

the blk/grn is usaually shorted with blk/blu underneath the tape but not positive on 68s as I have the later harness

How did it get to the NON running state?

thanks for the help. ill try that soon.

the car has been sitting up for many many years. we started it in 2001 when all wiring was still intact, the we had an infestation of effin cats. so.. they would get up in there and i guess really did a number on the wiring.

as of now it will turn over, and if you put in gear and turn it over the car wont move.
