ditch the l16 or not

Post by Pierce » 03 May 2005 07:38

right now i am debating wether to ditch my l16 or spend what i got on the l16. i have $1500 ready to spend or save up for a sr20 swap i dont want to do this because of the cost and it would take alot of time and money to buy and install that engine. either way i was going to but the complete frontend kit from datsport just because all the busings in my frontend are shot. any info on mods for the l16 would be greatly appeciated. thanks

If doing a L motor do a L20. Find a block and closed chamber head.Cost will be the same to do. I know I have done 2 L16s and would do a L20 again.(save the L16 oil pan,dip stick ect.

Remeber the SR20 is going to be alot more money due to new radiator, high vol fuel pump, new heater plumping, electrical hook ups(whos going to help you?)Should get a new clutch ect........ These are not cheap.

If you want a SR20 car best to wait for one to come up for sale already done for 4-8k$$$$ Baby forces sale!!!!!!!!!!!

Find a good l20 block and build it up on the side(w stand) this is the best way and you can still drive your car around and ask ?s about the car, motor ect. This is the best way to do it. Then when ready you can install it in a day or so.

Another l20 block and head should be avail around for 50-300$ tear it apart and look at the bearings piston bore ect and ask previos owner why it went bad. maybe just need a re-ring. Then work on getting a head, cam ect....

what do you think about the front end kit? my dad would be the one helping me with the swap. my dad also found a full front clip of a car w/ an sr20 for like $2400 is this a good deal?

Pierce I only know l series mottors and mildly mod ones at that.
The SR is out of my area.
2400 seems a bit much but maybe on the west coast is cheaper due to the high # of shipping ports.
A guy here in Tacam said he could get Sr20 from 1500-1700 for the motors. But I know hes getting front clips so I dont know the real price but he said he could do my car for 4-4500$(Sr20DET) Installed drive away.

As for your bushings Dave Turner motorsport in Cal has bushings avail(ck the dime quarterly the phone # still good but website is hosed to another truck site.

Datsport kit is the one to get but the Sr20 is not as simple as one thinks(sesp if doing the first time)
I have seen alot of unfinnish projects on the Dime Quarterly for sale.

You were asking about keepin the l16 so there must be a money issue involeved cause the Sr20 will be in the same price range once you get done.
Radiator
new clutch
high vol pump/tank mods
x member
front x member
bigger brakes

ASK yourself How many people really have SR20 DET datsuns on here. I bet less then 10 percent if that. So that gives you a idea what your about to take on.

Are you willing to put your car put down for 6 months to maybe forever(most likely loose interest) Out of money.

Precisely. You dont NEED an SR to be cool, or to be fast. whichever you choose to be :-)

It took me several months just to build, wire up and install archaic EFI and a Z22E engine in my car. if it was an SR, I would never have finished.

Get an L20B. They are simple, cheap, and easy. And can provide adequate zing as well!

Just to let you know, you dont need to do x member mods to fit an sr20. I know a guy who just put spacers between the xmember and the motor mounts and everything cleared and the engine sits perfectly. If you go on cardomain.com under the 510 section look for "Mikes Bellow's Datsun" towards the bottom of page one. But to answer your question, simple mods to an L20B include a closed chamber head such as the A87. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can get dual sidedrafts but those are pricey so a lot of people use su carbs. L 18 pistons will raise your compression too. I'm using 280z flattops but there seems to be some contriversy over whether or not thats a good idea.
