MR2 inserts for 280ZX strut housings?

Postby S15DET » 10 Dec 2005 13:00

I'm ready to order damper inserts for my 280ZX strut housings and I understand that using a insert from a MR2 will give more travel. Can anyone comment on this? frenched510? Can anyone give me a part number, or tell me what year MR2 I need to get the insert for? Someone also wrote that it should be for the REAR of the MR2? Thanks for any guidance.

look at the web sites of shock companys ..but the ones i know about are the '91 MR2 monroe #73204 this will give the measurments. the tokico #3099 should be the right number. i have the KYB AGX adjustable #765015 in my auto-x car. but, be shure to either shorten the tube or space the bottom to make sure of a tight fit !!!!!! the MR2 strut will give u a more travel IF you shorten the strut...... ONLY !!! i hope this helps.

yeah I got the mr2 tokico struts through stillen. They are over an inch shorter i think. they are off the rear of a 88 or89 mr2. and techno toy tuning has little sleeves for their camber plates to allow those shocks in a 510 with their plates.

now that you have had them for some time how do you like them?
have they held up?
I have heard stories about the KYB AGX needing to be replaced because they leak out the fluid, have you experienced anything abnormal with them?

I understand that using a insert from a MR2 will give more travel.
I think you're looking at this the wrong way, or are missing vital information. Your strut tube, which the insert resides within entirely, is still the same length regardless of insert, so using a shorter insert (with necessary shims) will only reduce your travel by reducing stroke due to the shorter insert. You have to shorten the strut tube to get any benefit out of shorter inserts. If you lower your car without shortening the struts you increase rebound stroke and reduce compression stroke. Cutting the strut tubes down to fit a shorter insert gives you a compromise of more compression stroke (because you'll be at the same ride height but will have more strut insert shaft above the top of the strut tube) while maintaining adequate rebound stroke.
I'm your huckleberry.
