R180 in a 71 dime - stub axles from??
Hi - i tried to ask this on the back of vintageracers post, but i didn't get any responce, so i thought i'd start a new one:
i found an R180 LSD from an STI for a very good deal and i wanted to know what will i need to put it in the 71 510. will the R160 stub axles fit so i can bolt up the stock axles? will the driveshaft work as is? just wanted to know what i'm in for before i buy it!
thanks
Matt

I heard its possible to deremal the splined threaded thing so it fits in the r180 (the washer thing inside the rearend...... fuck you know the piece right?) and the driveline flange splines are the same. kamandodragon (spelling?) used to machine the stock 510 stubs to fit also. I wanted to try it myself but everyone wants like 500 bucks for a subi r180.

Mattc, can you count the number of splines on the diff (ie the # of splines the stub axle needs). I've been trying to research the possibility of using a STI R180 Diff as well, but the WRX/STI forums are not very informative & seem to provide conflicting information. One thing I read though said the R160's have something like 25 splines while the STI R180's have 27 (2 more than the R160's). If you could count them it would help determine whether R160 stubs are possible or not.
Also I'm still trying to figure out what kind of LSD is in the STI R180 diffs (again too much conflicting info). Is it a clutch pack or helical? From what I can find it seems that Subaru switched to Torsen in 2006, but what is was before I can't seem to find a definative answer besides it being "mechanical."

alright i work for subaru. i have a sti rear diff on my work bench right now as i type. i currently have a wrx lsd rear diff in my five 10. i am currently trying to convert the sti one to fit my dime. First off the stub axles i purchased from Kam( not sure his screen name but hes on the forum) work great on the wrx diff but the sti diff is larger when trying to fit thease axles they are to short the sti axles have a longer spline so when the stubs are in they dont make contact with the splines.I was thinking about cutting off some axles from an STI and cutting them off and drilling some holes on the flat service so i can put some bolts on them. Not sure if its going to work. Also the rear diffs on the STI are mechanical.

do you mean that the STI R180 and the WRX R160 have the same spline stub shafts, but the R160 stubs won't fit because the diff itself is wider and therefore there is not enough spline engagment to let the (modified) R160 stub shafts work properly?ilowdawg wrote:i currently have a wrx lsd rear diff in my five 10. i am currently trying to convert the sti one to fit my dime. how do the datsun R180s fit then? will the stubs from the datsun R180 work in the Subi R180?
BTW - i spoke with my friend who races subi's, he said the STi R180 has a clutch type LSD, the WRX R160 has a Viscous LSD.

WRX diffs are viscous R160's, while the STI are mechanical & the STI is bigger/stronger.thisismatt wrote:ilowdawg: how do you have the wrx lsd hooked up and why switch to the sti?
Cool, they must have been clutch pack from 2004-05, then in 2006 it seems like they switched to Torsen since Torsen is better for autocrossing that many STI owners like to do.mattc wrote: BTW - i spoke with my friend who races subi's, he said the STi R180 has a clutch type LSD, the WRX R160 has a Viscous LSD.
If the spline count is the same for the R180's then it seems that stub axle from a 240z or 260z would work. You just have to deal with the circlip change.
um, don't we put our old R160 stub axles in the Z/ZX R180s though?
then that would make that part of the R160 and Nissan R180 the same, and both different than the new Subi R180.
What about trying to get the STI's CV axle to work in the 510 to boot!

Not sure about the stub axle question. Maybe my studying R200 conversions threw me off, which use the 240z stubs if I remember right.rnorrish wrote:um, don't we put our old R160 stub axles in the Z/ZX R180s though?

My ultimate goal is to use a set of CV's (have the guys at DSS make a custom set) but it would be nice to have a simple/stockish option available.

The datsun 510 stubs if i counted them correctly have 25 splines.(again if my counting was done properly) . The STI axles have 27 splines and are about 3/4 of an inch longer than the 510 stubs.

We do use the R160 stub axles in the R180 720 diffs, but we remove the dust shields to get enough spline engagement in the diff. This may also work for the Subi diff, but having not measured or viewed the subi stub shaft, or measured how far inboard the snap ring groove is from the same shield on the subi diff, this can not be confirmed. If anyone actually gets here, please post the results. I believe there was a person on this forum who did figure this out once before, and offered his services on an exchange basis.
