Any interest in the 1973 Datsun 1600 service manual in PDF?

Post by j-bomb »

I was thinking about the limited resources for these cars that frustrated me when I started working on them. There's obviously a lot more to be found now with people connecting online. I don't know if this has been done, or if people would find it useful, but I would be willing to send out my '73 "Datsun 1600" (the PL510) factory service manual to be scanned into PDF, or maybe get hold of a document scanner and do it myself (and maybe return the scanner afterward :D). This isn't Haynes or Chilton's, it's the factory manual that's like 1-1/4" thick with photos of all kinds of different procedures. It must be 3-400 pages.

I'd need some donations to cover the costs, and I'm not really sure how to go about it exactly. The only thing I really want is to get the book back. It's already been spiral bound so it shouldn't be that hard to do it. If there's not much interest then I won't bother, but I thought I would offer up what I can to a community that I'm happy to see growing. Back when I got into these cars, it looked like people were giving up on them. We were throwing away decent parts because there was no way to find buyers. Hell, my stepdad and I cut up an entire 510 body that no one wanted and threw it in the dump. (It had rusted out shock towers and lots of other rust, but still.)

Anyway, let me know if there's interest in this idea.

Moreover, Derek has already scanned a veritable trunk-load of additional manuals that have yet to be posted. FWIW, the factory service manuals are good for torque specs and the like, but they also taught Haynes the phrase "assembly is the reverse of disassembly" that I hate so much. The best service manual for a stockish 510 is the "How To Keep Your Datsun Alive" book that comes up every now and then on eBay. Easily worth it's weight in gold.
