Phils 510

Here is my 510 build. It's the short version . At the moment it's completely gutted. In body work stages getting ready for paint. I'm not a paint/body work kinda guy. My 510 was built to be super reliable. And it was. James Johnson gave me an opportunity I'm trying to take advantage of. Hope you guys enjoy. There's more to come.

You know, at first I saw the lineup of life sized projects used as wall paper...I'm thinking this is a seriously sick man.
Then I see a conversion to 68 wipers and small tail lights - now I'm thinking this guy is seriously disturbed! :shock:

Honestly, this is great. I love it. Keep the photos coming. As a serious lover of nearly all things '68 510, I'm happy to see recycled '68 bits on a later car.

If you are truly a hardcore old school fan, you should also install a 1968 wiring system (harness, fuse panel, and other bits)... :cry:

Spot welds aren't fun. I've learned a few tricks to add to my limited body work knowledge. 68 2 doors are hard to find at nw prices. Jeff has that luck though. At first it was a simple paint job. I love the wiper system so why not. Then the tailight panel and front valance because the old panels were a little dinged up. I will admit I don't like the 68 grill or antenna placement. I wish I was "hardcore" enough to build a proper 68 but i dont own those hard to find parts.I'm building it for me. With my own personal touches. Fuse box will be inside the cabin. I have a parts dash so I will be running a 69. I just got it this last weekend and the tailights today. I'm exited about that. Now if only I can get ahold of metal pillar vents I'll be set

I'm finally done drilling out the cowl section. I will say it's tons of work. Not for the weak!

Next step is removing the tailpanel. Then clean and weld everything up. Normal body work will begin after these two are done. Did I mention I'm trying to make it to canby. That's not my goal it's my deadline .

What a cool project...I have a couple of questions, when you remmoved the rear light panel,
were there any brazed (brass brazing) points at the top lip were it meets the trunk lip?
On both of my '68s they were brazed there.

Also, I have a few metal vents, cause I got some better ones. If you like I can check the stock and take some pictures.

You're right brazed at the top corners . I cut them angled with an air grinder. My thoughs is I'll do the same for the 68 one. Weld and grind smooth. I know what a decent pair of those vents go for so I'm afraid to even ask.

Here's hopefully the last of the spot welds. Now I just need to assemble it. Then it's back to square one. Getting a beat up shell ready for a nice paint job.

You know Phil, not only do I love what you are doing - I also love the snips of projects in the background - like the convertible 4dr 510 off in the corner of the above shot...
