Very Nice - I like the fact that it is a driver and not a trailer queen. I hope to see it at one of the local events in the near future.

Second that :!:

I love seeing a 510 doing what it's talent was meant for. Good effort on your part to bring it back and congrats on the 1st 510 to ever finish and 9th overall :!:
I wish I could join ya in the next Targa, but I'm going to have to built a more rally purpose 510. I will join you at Laguna next year though :D

Cheers to your great build.

Looking back at this thread, it sucks that all my picture links are broken (my domain name got scooped and thus went my webhosting). Here's a very short synopsis that I trimmed down from a post on japanesenostalgiccar.com/forum.

Awesome Shots Derek. The picture of you car at crater lake is amazing...so amazing that it is my new background. Hopefully we can get together when I am back in the Bay Area for a spirited drive.

Because the Ice man likes pictures I edited posts using find-and-replace to get some of my pics onto active hosting. A few early ones and my whole Megasquirt project. Enjoy!

This is why I keep all my photos local and keep a local gallery that is updated with the new pictures before uploading.

It's really easy! I have a folder on my desktop, "510 in" where any of my build related pics get dropped, and then just a "510" folder which receives the output of the gallery software (in my case I use photoshop's built in web gallery feature, but I'm sure you could find a free utility to do the same basic thing). Run photoshop, select the web gallery feature (once you set it up the first time it remembers everything), hit go and it generates the gallery with thumbnails and large images of your specified size and even skips the old ones when you're just adding some new pictures to the existing gallery. Then I drop the whole folder onto my site via ftp and the ftp application skips the existing files of equal size and adds the new ones. ...of course I don't label any of my pics :P

It's been too long -- I was feeling bad about my car being a "Featured Project Build" and not posting sheeeeet about it for so long.

So when we last left off I was living the California lifestyle, enjoying track days and canyon roads all year long, but things change...

An alternative fun car arrived (1987 Porsche 944 Turbo in fall 2008)
A real-ish race car was built up (1989 CRX Si 24h of Lemons racer, run 5 events since 2010 - https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Warh ... 7420126386 )
Fun budget was limited (started work in 2010 at Mission Motors an awesome start-up building high performance electric and hybrid vehicles, but the pay was start-up like - ridemission.com)
An attempt was made to learn how to track a motorbike (SV650S)

Through all this the 510 got a bit left behind.

It got used sporadically, but more than anything just took up $175/month in parking.

2010 was the last time it saw serious use, transporting me down to Willow Springs to take a 3 day SCCA driving school. 2 days at Streets of Willows corded my V710s. The third day was at Big Willow on my T1Rs where I had the entire track to myself. I ran it until I felt like I should make sure I can make the drive home.

I also took part in my first and only vintage rally, the 2010 Snowball. http://www.thesnowballrally.com/ It was fun and there were cool cars and nice roads, but my car was almost TOO prepared. I would have rather done it in an a clapped out 411. To mix it up, I tried to drive through some snow on the side of the road and had to be towed out of the mud.

Image

After that between Lemons and my motorbike the 510 saw basically no sporting time. Flash forward to October 2011, I had scheduled back-to-back track days, Infineon on my bike and then Thunderhill (reverse) in my 510. It'd had been a year and half since I've had the car on track and was looking forward to contrast and comparing the two modes of having fun.

In the third session of my bike day I low-sided entering turn 7 at about 30mph. The crash itself was actually pretty awesome to experience, sliding along on my kneepucks and forearms with the bike ahead of me. The bike sustained about $100 in damage, but part of that was a broken kill switch, which meant I was done for the day.

The next day at Thunderhill was a revelation. The track in reverse is astounding. All corners into crests become crests into corners. There is a jump. The group running the day was super relaxed and I managed to do 13 (yes thirteen!) 20 minute sessions on track, chasing my friend in his Elise. I loved driving my car again. Forget motorbikes.

Here's my car with a Cherry Blossom tree around the corner from my house from this Feb:

And with a friends short owned Landcruiser at work:

This spring I sold my bike after doing my final track day on it at Laguna (had to do the big Northern California three at least once).

I then signed up for 2 days at the new Oregon Raceway Park near hood river, which would be the centerpiece of a 4-day driving adventure in mid July. Time to get working on the car again!

I started a to-do list in Google docs, identifying 70 things to do. I managed to get to 57 of them:

Blacked out rad support -- something I've been meaning to do since oh 2005 or so

Interior Before -- I've never done anything to make this look nice (obviously)

Rustoleum grey -- cheap and cheerful (but smelly)
Image

With fresh (too fresh) Rustoleum inside and newly painted Wats w.185/60R14 Dunlop Direzza Star Spec stickers, it was time to hit the road!

I went with a couple of Lotus friends (Elise Sport and Exige 260S Sport), we did 2000 miles in 4 days, and 200 or so laps of ORP. That track is AWESOME. It is a 510 friendly circuit with lots of elevation, camber and corners. So fun. The back roads were great too -- high desert to rain forest, northern OR has it all.

It wasn't without any hiccups, I managed to kill yet another Saturn Alternator, but I had brought a spare (check the list!) that was nearly ready to bolt in.

So I am stoked on my car again. I have another Lemons race in a couple weeks, but am planning on tracking the 510 at least once more in 2012 -- probably a Lotus Club day running T-hill backwards again. Need to get a better jump pic!
