Re: Old school 510
So I've realized a couple of things since i started this project.
1. it's a lot easier to sit on the couch and order stuff for the car online than it is to actually work on the car. but it's nowhere near as satisfying.
2. These cars have a whole shitload of parts!!! a whole lot of bagging and tagging going on
3. There are truly inspired craftsmen who own these cars i know i will never achieve these levels of greatness
4. there are only two kinds of 510s, those who have had rust repair and those will are going to need rust repair
Rust Repair almost seems to be a required "Rite of Passage" for acceptance into the "Realm" and i since i too have found some rust during the disassembly it appears that i will soon be initiated.
But first things first My VW R-32 which was backed into a couple of weeks ago has been repaired, so i'm smiling again.
Yesterday while driving home from the store i spotted a fairly stock white 510, since my wife was driving i was able to get a couple of pics.
and finally a friend of mine who is restoring a 240Z gave me the front seats since he replaced them with something different.
Other than the rust discovery, the teardown is progressing smoothly. i've only encountered 2 rusted bolts that have broken off (i've made friends with WD-40!
i still need to pull the doors and finish taking out the dash but i'm waiting on the drivetrain untill after my dad comes up 'cause he'll want to see the engine run whjich is the least i can do since he was the one who encouraged me to get started on it.

We all have to start somewhere. Some of us ( ) still have a ways to go. But compared to my first 510? I have improved.Bike papa wrote:3. There are truly inspired craftsmen who own these cars i know i will never achieve these levels of greatness
I advocate its avoidance at all costs, including spending more on a solid shell initially. That doesn't always happen. Rust can be cured, just takes cubic dollars (and that's if you're doing it yourself). Quite a few body panel craftsmen on The Realm, lots of lessons to be learned.Bike papa wrote:Rust Repair almost seems to be a required "Rite of Passage" for acceptance into the "Realm" and i since i too have found some rust during the disassembly it appears that i will soon be initiated.
Because when you spend a silly amount of money on a silly, trivial thing that will help you not one jot, you are demonstrating that you have a soul and a heart and that you are the sort of person who has no time for Which? magazine. – Jeremy Clarkson
Re: Old school 510
I'm not discouraged by the small amout of rust I've encountered. I know the rocker panels just in front of the wheel wells will have to be replaced but the floorboards are still solid so that decision is solely dependent on how anal I get with this build.
I've spent most of my working career as a sheet meal worker so I'm no stranger to metal fabrication or welding but I have to admit my welding skills are a bit rusty ( hopefully not as bad as the car) . For sure I'll be practicing before I touch the car. Having access to a sheet metal shop will certainly help with any fabrication.
Moving forward with a positive attitude.

Re: Old school 510
Removed the all of the glass last night. Everything was in good shape (except of course for the rubber).
Really motivated to get this thing completely stripped and ready for media blasting.
PMK, how's the engine swap going?
Did you notice the outdated license plate on the white 510?
