Although the rust repairs on the right hand side of the car haven't been finished, we started on the left hand side. Again, for panels that look reasonable in terms of rust, turn out to be a lot worse under the skin.

Given the issues on the front end of the car, it was decided to remove the right hand rail and skirt along with the radiator support. The replacement panels from the gold shell should have helped fixed the issue, however when the donor parts returned from the sand blaster the rust at the bottom of the strut tower turned out to be much worse than expected. The gold shell's radiator support was in good condition so that will be used at a later point once the front end is all squared up and welded.

Fast forward a few weeks and the front end has finally measured up and squared off. Time to start welding it back together.

Along the way there has been a few distractions, namely some additional parts cars. I was tired of hunting around for small parts all the time so I did a deal with a gent and picked up 4 more datsuns. 3 out of the four cars have had very hard lives and generally only good for parts. One car however, the 68' has some potential. Mainly in the engine area, but the wheels look pretty cool to me too.

Following this thread with interest, good to see some detailed pictures of rusty rockers and how they come off as it's on my todo list. Looking forward to more updates.

The 68 car is cool - I have a soft spot specifically for the 68's. Does that fender emblem say 1300 or 1600?

The FJ is awesome. Nice vintage find. It's be cool just to get that 68 together as is, instead of parting it. They are quite unique amongst the 510/1600's.

I'll admit - the photo of the car missing its entire front end, and rockers, fwd are of the rear quarters and even the B pillar cut... man most would have walked away! I look forward to seeing this come together.

We don't come across goodies like this in Canada, or at least I don't.

Very tidy workmanship on your chassis. I like your approach and execution. Question: do your hands actually get dirty?

There will be more panels to coming off, I'll endeavour to take more pictures along the way. It's hard though, sometimes your just on a roll and don't want to stop. I just put an order in for some more reproduction gear, hopefully it will arrive soon.

Hey Byron, I've never really been a big fan of the 68', not keen on the swept gauge, exposed wiper mech and the small tail lights, however when I saw this car I was interested straight away. I've save the floors from the green car for it and got some better tail lights already, haha. I haven't heard it run yet, it wants too, but there is so much baked on old fuel in the tank. So I took it out today and started cleaning it. Yes I like the fj too, hopefully it will fine, no leaks any where and internals look very clean.

As for the two door it's coming together now, the car would be a lot further if I didn't have to deal with the front end.

Thanks, looking forward to them, great to have a better idea of what I'm going to encounter when I have the time, money and patience to do mine.

What repo gear?

The 68 does have some potential, but don't be fooled there's a lot of work to be done on that car too! Thanks for the positive comments not sure about the last question though?

Probably just a question to remark on how clean your deconstruction pictures/car/space are above.
Because when you spend a silly amount of money on a silly, trivial thing that will help you not one jot, you are demonstrating that you have a soul and a heart and that you are the sort of person who has no time for Which? magazine. – Jeremy Clarkson

Oh ok, I understand now. I must say the shop isn't that clean, nor the car. The grey shop floors and primer on the car hides the puddy dust that is every where.
