I also sourced a Subaru LSD 3.90 for the car. At the same time I ordered the Beta Motorsport stub axles to suit. The diff was in a bit of mess so I got to work cleaning it up. It looks reasonable now, but I think it needs a bit more work.

I had to see what the wheel and disc combination would look like.

The start of the repairs. Rear floor pans. The front floor pans will also need to be done as well as under the seat. Plenty of little holes will need to be welded up along the way too.

Did those panels come from a donor car? Looks good.

What are you plans for the car - will it stay LHD or will you convert it to RHD? Just curious what the local rules/regulations are in WA.

Here in Western Canada, surprisingly the rule makers care little about sitting on the opposite side from everyone else. These vehicles are even allowed to be used as daily drives and even commercial vehicles. It causes some debate for sure.

Byron,

The panels are from automotive panel craft (listed on ebay). They are very well made, if they would have covered a little more area it would been great!

The plan is to convert to RHD, how I go about is still to be decided. Whether I just copy the necessary holes and take the supporting brackets/reinforcements or maybe unpick and replace the full firewall. I've driven I few LHD cars here (E30 M3) and whilst it was no real issue, I prefer RHD and in the scheme of the build, it isn't that much more work.

In Western Australia, you can drive LHD cars no problem, I know in Queensland it can be problem, I am not sure about the other states. A few years ago in Western Australia, it was a requirement that you put LARGE sticker on you front and rear bumpers "CAUTION LEFT HAND DRIVE" Pretty funny when you think about it, if anything the stickers themselves were more of a distraction than the guy sitting in the left hand seat!

I also started refurbishing the heater box. It was full of rubbish that had been collecting for the last 40 years.

OK - I'm a bit baffled here - where did this heater core come from? Out of this 510 pictured in this thread??
That is built like no heater box I've seen installed in a PL510.

See below for the 69-73 style delivered to North America and near the end of the page the 5 bladed fan style used in the 68's delivered to North America.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11938&start=105

So the question begs, what are we looking at here?

Very interesting. Look forward to hearing from you.

Bryon,

I sourced the heater box locally. I am pretty sure it's a standard spec Australian delivered heater box. I know the US spec heaters are different ( I actually got one with the car ). I assumed the reasoning for the difference was due the climate, given Canada's and the Untied States' extremely cold conditions (in some regions). I thought the Japanese spec would be the same as ours, but I just had quick look at few google imagines and the Japanese spec heater looks different again!

A quick question (maybe a silly one)... Given my car is the first two door I seen in the flesh I was wondering about this joiner/connector below. I have never seen replacements listed any where. What do you guys normally do, when they are rust out like mine? I would assume you just fab something up, right? Or is there someone online I can go and order a couple of replacements? There are few two door spec items that I'll need to track down, because they weren't supplied with the car.

I can't yet find that trim clip in the Parts Catalog. Not that's it's necessarily available any more, but you never know, and a PN might make it easier to find. I'll keep looking, but it isn't where it should be, so...

Hi Jeff, no the car is not from Carter, as for the progress its moving along reasonably well. Im trying to source some more general parts for the repairs. Western Australia doesn't have a huge amount of 510/1600's available. I hope to secure something this weekend to help the project along. Also with Christmas coming the project will slow with family commitments etc.

Is the progress on your build actually in real time?
Amazing progress in a short period! Unlike my own

That's would explain the differences in the heater box assembly. All 510's delivered to North America were built in Japan, and most that were delivered here got the "cold weather " heater box, save for a few 1968 model year cars at the very beginning. These were both posted in my linked thread.

We were discussing the fact that the 510's in Australia were built in Australia, often using local suppliers for many components. We were just discussing this very topic at our local Christmas party this past weekend. Aussie cars got a number of things like Lucas switch gear and alternators as I learned from the conversation. Where the 510's that came to North America had fully Japanese sourced components like Niles switches and Hitachi alternators.
I guess the heater box was also a locally sourced components in their entirety including its sub components and design.
It's just neat to document these differences.
With the few times I've been to Mexico, it's the same there. PL510's there came with locally produced Dana strait rear axles and an entirely unique electronics system available in that market. Even the dash and gauge cluster looks slightly different.

Pretty cool.

Nice project!! Great to see pics of the progress. I wish I have the time to get mine going again, it will be a while for sure but it will come together I'm sure.
