great picture. I have a quick question, I don't see any inside vents on the sail panels next to your back window? not needed in dryer climates?
its not the having. its the doing...

You know, I have a decent set ready to go in, but never convinced myself that it was worth cutting that nice smooth panel. The rest of the car isn't airtight, so the doors shut fine (which I believe is the reason they are there), and I like to pop out the quarter windows for ventilation. That is a patterned vinyl that I don't think is airtight, so I think air can flow through the panel as it is. But maybe I'm missing something, what's the purpose of those vents?

speculating but I would imagine the fabric where the air is channeled through to vent out of the car would work as a filter and start to accumulate dirt and dust as you drive at higher speeds with the windows closed. this would take awhile to become noticeable but can't see how it would cleanly exist the car. just my 2 cents..

nice pics, Brad. My kids love the 510 as well

Vents in the rear vent through the c-pillar vents, and is the back end of the "flow through ventilation" system Datsun touted for the 510. Nothing more than the fresh-air vents in the front and giving that air a place to exit the vehicle, so you didn't have to have a window cracked. Similar when defrosting the windshield on a rainy day, gave the air a place to exit.

If it all works as-is, no real reason to change it.

Mine has shaved C pillar vents and I didn't put in the interior C pillar vents on. When I get in wet, the rear window fogs up terribly because the wet air the defroster kicks up has nowhere to go. It takes a long time to get the car dried up inside. This is probably just a Vancouver problem lol.

Nice pics Brad. Looks like you folks had a sweet lil trip!

I've never really stopped searching for the right wheel for my car, and have recently discovered that the beautiful Campagnolo magnesium wheels for the earlier Pantera are 15x7 and 15x8, with the right bolt pattern, 5x4.5. Last night I was able to borrow an old set from a local gentleman whom I had never even met, I just showed up at his door and asked "didn't I see a Pantera in your driveway a while back". Turned out he has an updated set on his car (15x8 front and 15x10 rear) and had the old 7" and 8" set in storage. They would need to be totally restored, which is the case for any of these that I can afford, but that would be a technically interesting project on its own, learning how to work with mag. However, the offset is a bit of a deal breaker. Here's my question, is there a 5-bolt hub that will fit the 280ZX spindle that would narrow the track a bit more than the Z31 hubs I’m using now?

What do you guys think of the look (ignore the tall tire?) I love it. I think it’s just the right vintage vibe for the 510, but I’m not sure it’s worth the suspension and brake changes needed to fit them.

I found this thread talking about hub offset.

I need to try and find a 5-lug hub that has the same offset as the 280ZX hub, that 3/4" difference may be all I need.

Brad, I believe Mario at TSR makes billet hubs in 5x114.3 that are the same offset as 280zx hubs. $$$ likely but something cool nonetheless. It would probably require you to rework your brake brackets as well... food for thought.

What are the offsets? How do the rears fit? Are your fenders rolled?

Yeah, he does, I'll have to measure more carefully this weekend to see if that'll give me enough room. Moving the brakes wouldn't be too big a problem. The rears would be a total re-do. A lot of work just to fit wheels, sure, but I'm still thinking about it.

The offset on these Campy's is about +3mm, and they're 15x7. I'm not sure there is a hub that'll let these fit under a stock (rolled) fender and 280ZX strut.

280zx or something custom would be your best bet!

Why not shorten the control arms and steering rods? Looks like you have plenty of adjustment in your camber plates to compensate.

Or perhaps a combination of these. By my measurements, if I used the 280ZX offset hubs, these wheels would only be about 6mm further than the wheels I have now. But that 6mm may be too much, I would have to do some small flares, or make suspension alterations that may be less than ideal. I've got the suspension pretty dialed in at this point, I'd hate to take a step back just to fit different wheels. Of course, there are inherent limitations to our suspensions that I have wanted to address. I suppose I could sell my whole suspension/brake package to fund a clean-sheet re-design. I've gone down this road in my head many times and it never makes it past the budgeting phase, then a do a track event and am reminded that what I have now works really well!

Not sure what I'll do this time. Could I cut up some Z31 and 280ZX hubs in the lathe and weld up a set with more inward offset? Maybe? Or a custom-offset hub out of billet?

Image

For illustrative purposes, ZX on the left, Z31 on the right. There's something between .5 and .75" of difference between the two mounting faces when installed on the strut.
