Re: Brad's '69 project
When we did some testing WAYYYY back, with the 1/4 mile, my problem was getting off the line and going. I did some 12.3 - 12.5's, but, to leave the line with some power, I of course had to slip the clutch a bit, to get boost up. This of course takes TIME, and, the tires are spinning a tad, which just kills that 0 60 range.
I also could not bring myself to just tach it up and kinda dump the clutch. As my car was/is setup for Solo use, it was likely too stiff in the rear for a smooth weight transfer.
Considering that I did mine on 9.5" race tires of the day, it is just amazing what today's street tires are capable of.
COOL!

Re: Brad's '69 project
12.3 -12.5 is seriously fast!! You mean you did that on a 9.5" drag tire or a 9.5" roadrace tire?
I have a choice of a few tires if I go again and need advice...
Fresh street tires, Full tread, Dunlop DZ102, 460UTQG, 2014 date code, 7" wide, 23" tall
Older street tires, Nearly smooth, RE-11, 200UTQG, 2012 date code, 8" wide, 23" tall
Adolescent roadrace, slick, Hoosier SM7, 40UTQG, 2013 date code, 8.2" wide 23" tall
Old drag tires, slick , Hoosier Quick Time Pro, Sticky, 2002 date code, 8" wide, 26" tall
This time I chose to just run the fresh street tires and I was surprised at how well they hooked.
To get into the 12's, I need to work on that 60' time. I believe I can improve it by learning better how to launch, but I MAY consider a tire change.
I'm worried about the gearing change with the old Hoosier drag tires, and I've heard that the roadrace hoosiers are TERRIBLE to try to drag with because of the stiff sidewalls. Maybe the wider and stickier RE11's with low pressure would be the best bet?

Re: Brad's '69 project
I did that one what were the Goodyear Cantilever qualifying road race compound tires, 9.5 x 20" tall x 13". That is the tire I used for Solo and some road racing/hillclimb use. So, with my 4:625 rear end, once I was settled in second gear, my car accelerates very hard
I'm not a drag guy, so I don't know what to say about the tires. Taller tires are making your gearing taller, yet, would that help with your first gear, off the line issue?
I think soft ( compound ) is good no matter what, and you have addressed that maybe softer tire pressure would help too.
Our independent rear suspension as is, is not known for being the best for drag racing, specially that most of us set the car up for Canyon carving and impeccable handing in corners..
2002...that is REALLY OLD.

Re: Brad's '69 project
I'm certainly not going to alter anything on my car for drag racing. But maybe it's ego that I'd really like to be able to say "it'll do 12's", you know? I may consider raising the rear suspension to square the tire to the pavement better during the squat. That's not altering the car, right, it's a free and reversible adjustment? I'm trying to convince myself that I can do that, and remove the spare tire, and maybe turn up the boost a bit for the next attempt.
Corner carving is still the briar patch for this car/driver team!!!

Re: Brad's '69 project
Yah, I get that, my priority was handling. The drag start thing was part of our tuning for Solo starts, as that is almost like a drag start, and some slaloms are won or lost at the start line.
I found bringing my rpm up to 4,000 - 4,500, then, just as I was given the go ahead, one last rev and then load the clutch as smoothly as possible, the load thus letting boost to be right there.
I have a ceramic disc, un-sprung, with a 2000 roadster pressure plate. NO SLIPPAGE of the clutch at all.
It is a bit of an off-on switch in traffic, but, I have no issues leaving a light.

Re: Brad's '69 project
Leaving at 3000 RPM just lit up the tires, while 2500 RPM was a bit of a bog. I made 8 passes last night and never really found the sweet spot with those tires. Check out this video, you can hear a 4th gear chirp!! That's crazy!

13.4 @ 106, I posted the timeslip above (now it's the previous page). It was awesome, perfect cool and dry weather. More fun than I really expected.

I thought I'd get more of a ribbing from you guys, maybe it's because it went to a new page. In case you missed it, here's my baby moon styling test, using some VW caps as the model. It's kinda growing on me.

Re: Brad's '69 project
Brad,
I like the look and started down a similar path for my street car.
Wheel Vintiques http://www.wheelvintiques.com sells 15x7 "smoothie" wheel with a 4x4.5" bolt circle. I actually bought a pair thinking I would paint them body color (#546 green).

Very sleepy Brad. The more I see it, the more I like it. I like it more than my car sitting on my BBSs.

Re: Brad's '69 project
Just past 60k trouble-free grin-inducing miles on the project!
Finally mounted the Ronal R9's. Couldn't decide on the color, so I tried two. One is a cool matte grey/silver, and the other is similar only a bit darker and more of a semi-gloss. I'm on the fence on the two colors. Maybe I'll try a version of the darker color with a little more gold in it to give it a more of the bronzey hue. What do you think?

Bronzier might work a little better with a white car. I can't say either of the two greys really pop on your car, but of the two I'd side with the darker (says the guy with a white 510 and dark grey rims).
