No, we are only allowed 6 tires for the whole event, they are marked prior to starting. If you need to use additional tires, you are penalized with a time penalty. Also, if you wear to less than 2/32", you are not allowed to run on them any longer (have to be legal by the Highway Traffic Act for Newfoundland).

Hey...in the pics that you posted of the body work being done what kind off rack or whatever is that so you can flip the car upside down and what not? Also you had it sand blasted didn't you...if you know how much hp did that sand blaster use on ur car. Thanks for the help.

One of my sons & I fabricated the spit that we mounted the car on by using 3" square tubing for the frame. We then built the rotating heads from some leftover bearing blocks he got from work (he is an Industrial Mechanic). The ends are similar to an engine stand so you can change configurations by making a different mounting bracket to bolt onto different cars and places to hold it. I have actually seen something similar done by using a couple of engine stands so you might think about doing it that way if you don't have access to steel fabrication equipment (saws, welders, etc.).

The shell was not sandblasted - causes too much warpage of flat panels. We first stripped all of the undercoating, caulking, tar and seam sealers off by hand then washed it all down with solvent to get to the bare metal underneath. We then had a mobile blasting unit come to the body shop and do all of the metalwork down to bare with soda media. I don't know the HP of the unit - big sucker though, probably a 100HP rotary vane type or something they use for doing buildings, tractor trailers, etc. It cost $1000 CDN (+GST of course) including the media to have it done - but it was fast and did a fantastic job. I have a 5HP compressor in the shop with a 100lb. pressure blaster that I use for doing smaller items such as crossmembers and rims, but it would have taken me forever to do a whole shell like that with my setup.

We then washed it down again and applied 2 coats of a high quality epoxy primer to use as a base for the colour primers and top coats.

ltd space in front of grill

RWD_NissanMan wrote:As far as the decision to uses a TMIC with a hood scoop, not my #1 choice either but there just is not enough room in front of the motor for a thick rad (3" core) AND a short tube high flow I/C (such as a Spearco type core) - without destroying the looks of the stock grill/bumper. A hood scoop & TMIC is about the only other way to do it - if you want to use an air-air setup.
i don't know if it will work, but couldn't the vented cowl?(in front of the window )which feeds the vents inside be modified to serve as the air intake much as scoop would function? when i had my cowling off to paint it and was thinking about a scoop i thought that this might serve the same function w/o a hole in the hood. when space is critical it seems that this area could accomodate some sort of modified air induction sysytem. my creative juices flow when i see cars like yours

Tarmac rally means all paved roads, no mud (but lots of gravel pulled up on the road from people cutting).

I stopped by Bob's house to check out the car while back at home in Ontario and it is a piece of work. I don't think I've seen a more well put together 510 in person. I'm looking forward to hearing about how it does in NFLD.

The TMIC setup has exceeding my expectations - I am quite suprised at how well it seems to work. For the track day last weekend I stuck a dual input digital thermometer inside both the inlet and outlet pipes of the intercooler (thermocouple in the air stream). During regular highway driving across the city (401) the inlet temp was running at around 50-55 degrees C and the outlet never moved off ambient (about 26-28 degrees C). One thing that I didn't realize is just how hot the air becomes under high boost. When pushing it hard at up to 18psi of boost, the inlet temp was far in excess of 120 degrees C (the limit of my thermometer). Yet under these conditions when the ambient on Sunday afternoon was around 33-34 gegrees C, I never saw an outlet temp of any higher than around 50 - 52 degrees C.

We have a dyno session set up tomorrow to do some fine tuning so I should have some more data to add soon.

You probably caught a rerun of the 2003 or 2004 Targa. It's on SpeedTV every-so-often. I do wonder how much of a delay we'll have before teh 2005 running airs...

If you watch enough of the Targa episodes, they cover a pretty wide range of interesting vehicles and front-runners. Hopefully the producers will find teh 510 interesting enough to cover. Or, even better, the 510 will be a front-runner. 8)

PS - Love reading the updates on the car!

The 2005 Targa Newfoundland will run Sept. 10-17. The first airing of the TV coverage will likely be on Global TV around the end of January 2006. It is then followed by a number of airings throughout the spring & summer by Speed. What you likely saw was the re-airing of the 2004 event. The Targa Nefoundland event has not yet had a 510 enter it - this will be the first one. There have been several vintage Datsuns compete in the other two sister events - the Targa Tazmania (on the island off the south coast of Australia) and the Targa New Zealand on the North Island. Just a small update - managed to get the car on the dyno at Neetronics on Friday night - did a conservative run up to 260 rwhp under less than ideal conditions (really hot & humid in Mississauga). We have some work to do to get a proper emulator for the EEPROM in the ECU so will be back to do additional fine tuning once we have the electronics sorted out. At least we were able to get the fuel mixture in the zone which is always the most dangerous thing to have wrong.

What boost were you guys running during those runs? Have any dyno graph i would love to see the power of a GT28 with such short piping. Boost must come on fast and hard :)
Im sure your waiting for the new Badbiki USB boards he should be doing soon.

RWD_NissanMan,
260 rwhp! Awesome, that thing must really get up and go. I hope to see the footage when it does eventually air. Good luck with the event. Hopefully you get a good support crew to chase you around. It's just over a month away, good luck with it all.

18psi - Neetronics does not record/produce graphs. He is more of a tuning specialist through the full range to concentrate on eliminating dead spots, etc.

Yes, I am on the waiting list to get the USB Multiboard as soon as Biki starts to ship them. I am more interested in his emulator if he ever gets that done though. In the interim we are going to see if we can do a hardware fix to the odd/even structure so we can at least do some tuning and create a new .bin file from the base maps we are using.

Morning Bob,
That was interesting with your temperatures. Before I put my intercooler on, I had inlet temps to my motor, at 16PSI, of 350 degrees F.. After installing my cooler, it dropped to 117F, at the same boost and roughly same ambient. Sounds like it is working fairly well. I bet a good spray onto the cooler, would definately help out. What was your exhaust temp, or do you monitor it yet? I tend to run at a part throttle cruise at 4-5000 rpm at about 1,170F-1,250F. At full boost, depending air density, I will see upwards of 1,400-1,600F., depending on how long my foot is through the firewall. I pour a lot of methanol into the system once boost is over 12PSI. I can totally imagine how well your car goes!!! The acceleration just keeps going, does'nt it.
