Yes, it is licenced & insured - has to be to be eligible to enter the Targa Newfoundland Rally because we drive on public roads during the transit sections between special stages. All rally cars are required to be "street legal" - LOL!!!

If it's like last year, yes you will -- but you'll have to wait until January at the soonest.

My brother and dad are still putting together the Z -- I think they might just make it. Good luck to you Bob -- please crush J Churchill and the Mopar factory teams for me and all the dimers in the world.

It hasn't really hit me yet - it is without a doubt a major event. I have run a few events in the past that were also fairly large; the 1986 CanAMex (23,000 km. in 21 days), a couple of Alcan 5000's, and the 1988 Wynn's Safari (Australia) along with lots of stage rallies, endurance racing events (BFG Sundowner, Molyslip Challenge Series).

When it really hits you is when you are staged at the start of the first competitive section - then you are off and the butterflies are gone.

Derek, no Jerry Churchill this year - he is in a very competitive situation with a US truck series so isn't coming. I was at Jud's party on Saturday night and we learned of another Unlimited Class entry, a 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S coming up from Florida. Now this will be fun if I can blow him off with a 1973 Datsun 510!! We'll see.

Also, it was just announced that John Buffum is entered this year in a 400+ HP STi - going to be driving a camera car for TV2GO (the producers of the TV footage) at full song through the event. Now this should produce some spectacular footage. Look for it first on Global TV in late January, then on Speed Channel throughout the spring of 2006.

following your project has been quite inspirational!
you guys get it done.... the right way.
I'm sure someone has already asked, but I must know, the design of the rotisserie.. where did it come from, and your thoughts on its function and or improvements that might be made?

Have you seen my vg30 wagon project? (street car) I'm putting the sr20det into another wagon for a customer of mine... damn all that plumbing for the front mount IC!!! I love your top mount... just dont think I can talk him into letting me cut up the hood... maybe a top mount air/ water??

I'm shure we would all love to see some action shots of your car (preferably airborne) put that skid plate to work!

once again, thanks for finding the time to post!!

Actually we came up with the design ourselves. It works very nicely - we can lock it in 45 degree increments. The trick to it all is to get the mounting adapters on each end close to the lengthwise center line of the weight so you can easily rotate it. This is set by the length of the arms going from the rotating head to the bumper mounts. About the only improvement I would make is to add a motor drive to turn it - but that is just being lazy!!!

I would really prefer to stay with the stock bottom mount turbo, like you did. Of course, to do this, I'll need to convert to rack and pinion. Your setup is the cleanest I've seen, but there's only one problem. Where the heck did you find a RHD 240Z rack? Is there another production rack that will mount in a rear-steer configuration like yours? Custom race racks are unfortunately too expensive for me.

Beautiful job, inspirational even.

Thanks for the compliment - had a lot of fun building it and competing in the Targa Rally. I have already entered it in the 2006 event - this time we are going to finish!!

Anyway, I didn't have too much difficulty finding a RHD rack. There were a lot of 240Z's sold in Japan, Australia & UK. I actually just got another one (as a spare) from a guy right here in Toronto a few weeks ago. It was left behind with the wreck of a J-spec Fairlady that was crashed at Mosport years ago.

The way I found one was to get on the Aussie & UK Z-car forums and just post an ad in the classifieds. Something is for sure going to turn up for you. I don't know of any other racks that might work. When I was researching this, I found that almost everything I looked into was too wide for the 510. Even the 260Z & 280Z racks are wider than the original 240Z rack.

Could you please tell me what is the target width for a 510 r&p? I'm assuming this is measured at the inner tie-rod ends, and is the same as our inner lower control arm mounting bolts? All small Hondas (civics, integras, etc.) have rear-steer rack&pinion, with several different ratios and widths, and are VERY plentiful. If I know what width we're looking for, I'll start measuring some.

It is not so much the overall width, it is the amount of linear movement the rack has when turned from stop to stop. I found the 240Z rack was right at the limit I could go after I removed the spacers at each end of the rack. You want the steering arms to hit the adjusters on full lock before the rack hits the limit of travel it has. Another way to do this would be to vary the length of the steering arm but this will also affect the degree of turn relative to how far you turn the steering wheel.
